While I typically try to alternate between hair salons and dressers, since I love trying out different hairstylists to find out who can cut and fix up my hair the best, my husband and children have a set hairdresser that they regularly go to. If she is out for the day or on leave, they won’t go to another hairdresser and will simply wait for her to return to work, which can result in pretty out-of-control hair that has grown too long in the meantime. Of course, it has its advantages, since their hairdresser now knows exactly how they want their hair cut every time (they rarely change it up) and how to effectively handle their hair. I, on the other hand, am more flexible and like to try out new and different salons for the experience. I also love it when I receive a referral from a friend and am given a new customer discount on my first visit. These always take a nice junk off the total cost for haircut and color.

Finding the right hairdresser can be tricky because each of us has our favorite style and character. Currently I am lucky to find a hairdresser near my house that is both cheap and good. I've been to more expensive hairdresser but the style didn't suit me like my current hairdresser, so for now I'll stick to him. Before I found him, I tried many salons and hairdressers but mostly they didn't suit me or they suited me but too expensive. My hair gets long very fast, so I have to visit a hairdresser every couple of months because my hair doesn't look good when it's too long.

I find that by consistently visiting the same stylist, you're sure to get the cut you want. They learn how you prefer to wear your hair and what difficulties if any you have. It also creates a comfortable atmosphere, when you can talk about the kids, jobs, spouses and just relax for a bit.
Every 6-8 weeks I go to the same person...wash, cut, and eyebrow wax (youch!)
It also prevents you from leaving the salon like this guy...do you think he had a bad day?

Yep, it's me. I haven't been to hair cutter since the last one chopped it all off when i told her to trim as little as possible...that was uh.. about 7 years ago. I cut my own hair now and always will. i can trust me to do what i say and it doesn't cost me a dime.

How do you cut the back, though?
I have been cutting my own bangs for twenty five years, but I can't figure out how I would cut the ends of my hair myself. I have long hair... I guess you just put clips on it how it is and then lift the clips, maybe? Hey, want to post a video of how you do it? That would be awesome!

I'm with Unwirklich! I don't go to any hairdressers. I don't get my hair cut, colored or styled by anyone else.
I simply trim the ends of my hair with good hair scissors I've bought for myself, and that's it. I guess I just don't like to spend the money, and I like my hair the way it is naturally, so I don't want other people messing with it.
If I'm going to spend money, I'd rather have a book or a movie than have a trip to a salon.

No special method--usually I'll just pull sections of my hair forward into my line of sight and snip off the ends. Sometimes I'll gather it up into some ponytails and trim the ends off each one. My hair is not very thick or anything, and I don't tend to cut very much off at any one time, so this might be easier for me than for some other people.
