Is it okay that an 8th grader in Ohio was suspended from school for having what the school considered an "extreme" haircut?

-Quote- A young Cincinnati Bengals fan has been penalized for clipping. Dustin Reader got the NFL team's stripes and "B" insignia cut into his hair as a tribute to the team's good season. When he showed up to school in the southwest Ohio city of Hamilton on Monday, officials put the eighth-grader into in-school suspension. The school said its code of conduct prohibits extreme and distracting hairstyles.

Reader's parents and barber said they don't understand why the haircut is out of bounds. His father said his son just wants to show pride in the 6-2 Bengals. -End Quote-

Even the headline called it a "Wild" haircut. Putting myself in the parents or kids place, I probably would have got the haircut without a second thought and been just as surprised as they were at the in-school suspension. However, at that point, I probably would have admitted that I had made a mistake, the hair cut IS extreme and distracting and either do my work in-suspension or get it cut in a way that satisfies the rules. There is no grade penalty for doing work in school suspension, and a hair cut isn't where I want to fight my battles. School administrators have more important things to do than argue with parents over dress code infractions. How about a lesson for the real world. When the kid gets a job, the boss is the sole arbitrator of what is or isn't dress code. Dad and your barber won't be able to help.

That's just dumb to me. If the kid and his parents were fully aware that it wouldn't be allowed than they probably shouldn't have done it, but if they saw it as just a fun haircut (like I would) I'd be pretty upset about him being suspended.

All I keep thinking is that's so dumb and the punishment of in school suspension is even dumber. He's still in the school with his "distracting" hair and no doubt, the story being in the news will make him an even bigger distraction. There are a lot of other issues an eighth grader can have that maybe schools should try to focus on instead of making things like haircuts and clothing a big deal.
