Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
To beard, or not to beard..... that is the question?
Every so often, especially when I'm on vacation, I start to think about growing a beard.
I know that there are some people that it really does work for, but as a general rule are beards a good look in 2009?

BEARD!
Beards can be very sexy, expressive, and a lot of fun. Not to mention they're masculine as hell. But there are a few warnings and requirements regarding beards:
A.) You must be able to really fully grow one. If it's patchy and never fills in right, then give up or go for a different cut of beard. Don't try to look like a kid playing "daddy".
B.) Be prepared it will make you look older. For a lot of men, that's just fine! You'll also look wiser and more distinguished.
C.) Keep it trimmed and neat. If you want a bushy look, then go for it! But if your look is neat and tidy, then keep it trimmed daily. Beards are kind of like women and long hair--it takes maintenance!
With those rules in mind, I still say you should give it a go! Of course, I generally prefer the rugged Viking look on a man anyway, so I'm a little biased. The good news is that you can always shave it off. This decision is a LOT less permanent than a tattoo.
See? beards are a good thing!

It's totally a function of what kind of what kind of face you've got, and what kind of facial hair you've got, and what kind of hat and clothing you're going to be wearing with it, and what kind of style you're thinking of, etc. etc.
It's all about framing your face and maintaining a look, so if there's a beard style that works for you, then sure, go for it if your partner is okay about it.
What does it being 2009 have to do with it?
Historical trends for or against beards were mostly a function of how efficient and easy-to-use the razor technology was.

I can answer your question by directing you to look at my avitar. It is an actual picture of me. Now I ask you, what could be more appropriate for the 21st century. Assuming you are a man, with any luck your beard may turn out to be almost as nice as mine. And, by this time next year, you could possibly be looking at seasonal work as a department store Santa, unless you really hate children.
This is not me!

It depends on your face features. Most men doesn't look good with beards. They look too intimidating to scary while there are others who pulls it off nicely.
It'll be better if you'll your picture so we could help you think about it. :)
But in the end of the day, what other people don't matter at all actually. As long as you're happy with it, either it looks good or not, then you should stick to that. :)

I used to sport a beard real well, I would never let it get long, I felt it made me look a little older and wiser then maybe I really was.
You can see here in exhibit A that it looks fantastic.

After a solid 5 years of having the beard I had to give it up after I got hired at the local Fire Department, beards are unpractical for fire fighters because they can break the seal on our breathing gear. So, I have become re-acquainted with my Mach 3.
I say if you have the opportunity to grow one, give it a shot, if you like it keep it. Good Luck!

As long as you're an adult (e.g. not a teenager) I'd say it's definitely worth trying out, at least once. Some light stubble works with most men, regardless of face-shape. Even a full beard can look nice, as long as you are trying to channel something more like Cat Stevens than, say, Russell Brand.

A beard should always look natural, not forced. Sometimes a mustache helps the beard look more natural, other times, not so much. As aforementioned, everyone's different--a picture of yourself would help us in determining the perfect beard for you--in our own humble opinions, of course ;-)
And, if you've got some free time, why not check out some of the beards from The World Beard and Mustache Championships? Some of them are good for a laugh!
