I do hate it when I make a dumb mistake. In the past, I did beat myself up over dumb mistakes. I made myself miserable by remembering them over and over, by dwelling on any humiliation associated with them.

Somewhere in my late 20s, I learned to laugh my mistakes off. Seriously. That has made all the difference. It takes some bravery to make fun of oneself, but laughter heals most embarassing situations really well.

Example: Last week we were rehearsing a Christmas musical at my church. The director told me to tell someone something, so I ran over and told him, right then. I hadn't realized he was in the middle of a skit with someone else! I had charged in there and interrupted them. My old self would have been mortified, cried, and ran off to hide my humiliation. My new self apologized to them later, and laughed silently in the meantime at how silly I had been. If they hadn't still been in the middle of their skit, I would have laughed at myself out loud right then, and invited them to join in.

I am the Queen of dumb mistakes and I do beat myself up over it for a day or two. Eventually, I come to terms with it and shake it off.

We took some friends their Christmas presents a couple of days ago and I had accidentally labeled them wrong so he opened her present and vice versa. I was so embarrassed! I think maybe a lot of my problem is senior moments. :)
