I only text while driving when I'm either at a red light that I know is going to stay red for a long time (i.e. if it's on a set schedule and) or when I'm in a residential neighborhood that isn't trafficked much and everyone's going really slowly.
But if I'm on a busy street, a highway, or any other place where I pretty much have to be paying attention, no, I don't text. I'm not the greatest driver anyway, so I have to pay more attention than some, especially if I'm going to be changing lanes or something like that. (I got pulled for changing lanes at the wrong time when I was 16 and I'm still rattled.)

Absolutely not. It's everything I can do to adjust mirrors and the heating controls, etc., without slamming into something. I do cheat sometimes and talk on the phone in the car without my earpiece. I think dialing is more dangerous than talking. If you want to text, pull over and stop. You are, after all, looking straight at your little screen!

No... No... and Thrice No..
There's no reason to do it at all.... If I REALLY needed to send a message then I'll pull over and park before I'd pick up the phone.
Other things I wouldn't do while driving include
1) Apply make-up
2) Shave
3) Shave my legs
4) Play the Tuba
5) Make a Soufflé
If its really important that I do any of these then like texting I can find time to do them AFTER i've stopped driving.

In my opinion it is NEVER ok to text while driving. First of all you put your life in danger and worse you put other people in danger. So many things can go wrong when you take your eyes off the road even for a second. If there is every a time you gotta text and feel like you must do it I think for the sake of the rest of us on the road you should pull over and do your texting. I would be a very unhappy mother if you hit me while you were texting, especialy with my children in the car.

We all know the risks of talking on your cell phone while driving, but is texting just as bad? I guess those few seconds you take to look at the message or write a reply can have fatal results.

Yes, I occasionally do text while driving. I know it's not smart, and maybe it's just arrogance on my part. However, in my defense, I can text without looking at my phone, and I am a super-fast reader. I don't view it as any more dangerous than something like changing the radio....which is what my only accident ever was caused by. I don't think everyone should do it, and I do know the dangers of the act. I know someone who was killed in an accident due to texting while driving. But it all comes down to personal responsibility. I don't think it should be illegal.
