Reading the story doesn't so much make me believe or disbelieve in dark magic. What the story does reinforce to me are the darker aspects of the human soul. Magic, energy, belief, and actions are shaped by intent and will. Despite the malicious intent of both the mistress and the stepfather, the loving intent, actions, and energy of the boy's mother thwarted the negative actions and energy directed at the boy and will help provide for the boy's recovery. Love, gratitude, and the sincere desire for the best and highest purpose for all involved will always manifest the best results.

I'm not sure how this could prompt belief as they don't even go into what the man and his mistress were trying to achieve in the first place. However.. depending on the outcome ... Black magic on a whole is believed to have a dangerous balance. All of what is put out good or bad from a human being is given back by the universe 3 fold. Thus is the rule of three. If the man and his mistress both received 3 times the pain this poor boy does, I'll have more faith in the justice system. Black magic preformed by idiots? Not so much.
