When I first moved into this apartment complex years ago, there were 4 wireless networks (besides ours), none of them locked. Now there are 6 networks, 5 of them locked.

Anyone with a wireless modem has checked for other networks, and although it's infinitely small, it does put a technical strain on the network.
Now that we know just about everyone's done it, we can discuss scope. :)

If you use someone's unlocked network to the extent that you hinder their internet experience, you are partially wrong, but so is that person. Hundreds of internet profiles were hacked recently using the password "god", "123456", "Michael", or various other easy names/word combinations. To keep yourself safe, you must learn to protect yourself from simple attempts. It's the real-life equivalent of buying the brooklyn bridge.

Now if you're actively hacking someone's internet that most certainly has a decent protection, now we're getting into where the law should start coming in. This is the same as burglary. You do not belong in that area, you are taking something that doesn't belong to you and making someone else suffer. This is wrong, and there will be stronger and stronger laws to fight this in time.

I admit when my internet has been down, not only have I used someone's wireless unsecured network, but I almost felt obligated to secure it for them :P

Honestly, it's not the best idea. I never used it for more than a few hours until my internet came back up. I see it on my list of wireless networks all the time, and I wonder to myself - "why haven't they secured that?"

So is it wrong? Yeah, it probably is.

Yes I have and I don't think it's that big of a deal. If they don't want to share it, then it's very easy to add security to it. If they're too lazy to do that, tough luck.

I did... :( We have a neighbor who has a wireless connection. But I think it's pretty okay for me to access it because we're renting a place they own. Plus they already saw me connecting once. And I really don't do it now that I have my own connection at home.

But if you have no permission in accessing others' connection, then I think it's wrong. They're paying for it themselves plus they're not being safe anymore with you connecting. They're privacy is not being honored, in other words. Not anyone knows too much about networking so maybe they don't know how to have their network secured or so. And this isn't a reason for other people to abuse it.

If they're trying to keep people from using it, then yes, it's wrong. But there are many businesses and individuals that have open connections and share them on purpose. If in doubt, ask!

Just don't complain if they record and observe your activity while on their network. After all, if you didn't want them to see your accounts and passwords used while you're surfing on their network, wouldn't you have taken steps to prevent it?

Your lack of ethics may be shared by those you are stealing from and you end up getting stolen from too. Don't assume that your ability to justify your unethical choices makes it okay. People often figure that out when the same thing is done to them. Not so fun anymore getting free internet after your information is used by someone else, is it?

I've done it. And nope, I haven't lost a wink of sleep over it! :)

Here's the thing: I've never pirated...I mean, "shared files"....while using someone else's connection, and I personally think that proximity to wireless connection will become a relic of a notion in years to come. I believe at a certain point, Internet providers will have a constant availability (in most developed areas anyway), and we'll just have to log on to our account to have internet access anywhere.

And even if I'm wrong about Internet progress? It's not hurting anybody. The cable guys have fat, fat, wallets thanks to me (stupid, ugly cable guys!). Around here it's a pretty solid monopoly, so I know I'm not pinching from anyone else. Easy peasy rice and cheesy. I get my internet. The cable company gets a fortune. And no one is put out.

Hi,
i love the the way you asked .
I remember how not to connect when wireless is free in U.K.
In London you can stop everywhere and use it without any problem.
The question is cute but, INTERNET is free to access and you should not feel that way.
I pay at home 4 it and believe me when you get out to have a coffee or to a area where you can connect you feel very lucky.
I hope I asked it to you.
Cheers
