I have a friend who is suffering from depression... I hinted for awhile, nudge, urged, etc, but then finally I sat down with her and told her, "You need help, and I'm here to help you through it..."
And she listened, she cried, we cried together, and then we went to get her help.
It's not always the easiest thing to do, but when you know a friend is suffering, if you're a good friend, you find a way to intervene.
If it were someone I only knew online, I would attempt to send emails daily, pick me up message, personalized 'are you okay?' notes, etc... it's tough when 'virtual' friends pull back, because you never know the reasons for sure, so you can only do your best to keep contact.
