Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
How fair is it to fire a gas station employee for not carding a 30 year old for cigarettes?
My son got fired for not carding a 30 year old for cigarettes. They are supposed to card anyone who "looks" 35 or under. The problem is they are not allowed to card everyone. It will upset customers and they will buy cigarettes somewhere else. So, it is a judgement call.
Luckily, he got his job back a week later after appealing the decision. Now he is in the process of finding a new job. He is scared he could get fired again. Thoughts?

I've never heard of people in their 30 being carded. It really seems to me that your son's boss had a bad day or maybe he is one of those bullying bosses that do irrational things to make the employees keep their heads down.
I think it was very brave and good of your son to stand up to such nonsense! And while he got his job again, he can now look for a nicer place to work.
I meanwhile think life just isn't fair and that's that. We can only try to get in with good and honest friends and with a work place where we are treated with respect. And to get there, we probably have to get rid of a lot of unfair people on the way.

Very interesting. I guess I never thought about things from the gas stations stand point. I see where they are coming from. You can not sell to anyone under the age of 18. You want to card people but not people who are obviously older. The problem is some young people look way older and some older people can look way younger.
It does not sound fair that your son was fired and they guy was 30. If he was under 18, that would make sense. But how can they fire him when they guy was legal? There is too much gray area involved. Like you said, this is not clear cut on who to card. It is completely a judgement call. I would probably get another job also. Why sit around to get fired again?
It would make more sense if anyone who bought cigarettes or alcohol had to be carded. This way no one gets in trouble selling to a minor! http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2330/2169411758_04091a2485_m.jpg

I have seen signs up about policies for carding people who look under a certain age. The problem is that is super subjective. If I asked 20 people to guess my age, I would probably get a wide range of answers. If you're going to have a subjective measure like that, you can't be firing people for reasonable judgement calls. It would be one thing to sell to a 16-year-old, but a 30-year-old could reasonably look over 35. Who decides how old someone *looks*? I think he's smart to be on his toes and looking for another job. They were also smart to give him his job back, because they were in the wrong. A policy like that says "we trust your judgement" so they need to follow through with that.
