I'd be excited by it!!
It would mean that our leaders are finally understanding that we're not the only ones out there and we need to think globally instead of as individual countries.
It would also mean that we might be in for some new technology - which in turn could mean light drives are around the corner, which means that we can visit other worlds too! I think that would be cool... As long as there are no "probes" involved...
Of course there could be some kind of crazy X-Files type conspiracies going on, in which case, I'd say that we're par for the course in THAT area... What? You mean our government has been keeping secrets from the dumb, ignorant masses?? Say it ain't so!!!
As far as chaning our views on every day life, for some, drastically (the ultra religious may have some problems with higher intelligences) for others, we'll just roll with it. Me? Like everything that happens with the government, I'll wait till it hits closer to home. That being said, I think it would stimulate the imaginations of people all over the world as to what the possibilities could be, and to our kids, that there's no limit to what they can accomplish - they can even travel beyond the stars!

To me this scenario is a matter of when it happens more than if it will.
To answer the first part of the question, I would be thrilled that meetings were taking place because that would mean the likelihood of a surprise attack takeover by these aliens would be minimal. These meeting would not rule out an enslavement or destruction of the human race but at least the would be kind enough to tell us about their intentions before carrying out any negative plans. I would hope for the intestinal fortitude of the world leaders being met with would rise to the occasion and negotiate for, decide for and allow for a peaceful and hopefully cooperative relationship in the future between us humans and the other life here on Earth and these new aliens.
My views of daily life would change initially to a more hopeful outlook on the long term survival of our species as I now have a bit of a skeptical to say the least opinion of the chances we have at staying this side of extinction long term (like sharks or other prehistoric evolutionary success stories) in the big picture without the outside help of a benevolent alien species to guide us along. I would until otherwise notified believe that the world was in for some great awakening and new levels of awareness with this new set of parameters as to what is possible. Overall if this meeting of leaders and explorers was friendly I would just be overcome with hope and relief.
