I would reach out to help them. The last thing I'd do is blame them for not having insurance ... not everyone can afford good insurance, and not everyone who HAS insurance will see the full compensation they need.

Yes I would help them.
If they did not have it due to a family member loosing a job, or another unexpected financial reason I would not blame them at all.

If they did not have insurance due to poor planning, I would still help
Not having fire insurance is a mistake, but everyone no matter how smart they are, makes mistakes. I have made bone headed mistakes in the past and gotten help, that is part of life, live and learn. I would try and help them as much as I can & in the manner of a true friend I would remind them the importance of good insurance when they get a new place.

Well I have done this. A few years back my friend and her two children lost everything after there house caught fire. I allowed them to move in with me (free of rent) until they could rebuild the house. Although I was happy to help them out I will say that I got screwed in the end, and things ended pretty ugly. Fortunately we were able to repair our friendship but I won't be as quick to lend a helping hand, at least to this extent again. I would rather help someone out financially then to open my home to them...sigh!
