I would as an employer talk to him and try to motivate him positively by communicating the importance of it or by giving incentives. I don't want to lose a good worker but also I will have to consider how he would influence the people around him. I would try to put him in a different team that has stronger and more positive people and expect some of it to rub off on him. I would give myself a time line and also discuss the same with him and wait for him to change his attitude. If it is not going to work despite my efforts I would have to fire him.

If the employee's negativism did not affect the morale of the work force, or if it were not visible to clients, then I do not see how it would be an issue. I would keep the employee.
It may adversely affect that employee when he/she were considered for a promotion, especially if that promotion involves added cohesion and team work with colleagues; but, if it the present it poses no duress on the company, the employee stays.

Well if I am the employer I would talk to the employee personally and tell something about his or her character I won't just let a potential employee go but of course he or she must fix his or her attitude to fit in with his or her co workers
