If one of your closest friends is gay and your mother is quite homophobic, how can one attempt to ingratiate one to the other?
One of my best friends is a gay man, my mother is not discriminatory against gay people, but she is homophobic. There are social situations which both are present. I would like these 2 important people in my life to get along. What can be done?

It's not going to be easy, but fortunately they don't have to become great friends; they just have to get along. I would spend some time thinking about topics they both enjoy, and always try to steer the conversation in that direction. If you can find things that you know they both agree on, that would be even better. Do they both like a certain type of food? If so, it would be great if you could manage to get it served at events they mutually attend as well.

• Thank you for your answer. Finding some common ground between them I suppose is the best place to start.

Very very tough one I wouldn't initially tell her, let he begin to like your friend and see if she even notices. Then once it comes down to it, if she absolutely loves your friend, then changes her mind because they are gay...then maybe it will click in her mind of her judgement issues.
