In my opinion, alcohol is the scourage of humanity and cigarettes aren't far behind. If those two substances had never existed and cannabis was made to be the legal drug in our society, we would all be so much healthier and happier. Trust me! I know this for a fact. The only people who are anti-marijuana are those who have little or no experience with it and/or those easily brainwashed into believing what has been drilled into their heads by the false propaganda over the past 50+ years. To truly understand it, one needs to forget what they heard as a kid and do their own research from reputable sources and/or try it themselves and see. When I see people dying of alcohol poisoning every day or having convulsions and hallucinations from alcohol withdrawal, and I think about how cannabis is so much safer and so much less addictive than alcohol, I just look down at the ground and shake my head. I guess one day the truth will come out and finally be accepted by all, but until then, we are all being duped while the pharmaceutical companies and wood pulp industry are laughing all the way to the bank. How sad for us to have allowed ourselves to be conned for so many decades. Shame on us!
The false information we have been fed regarding the benefits and effects of marijuana is probably THE biggest and most elaborate lie in the history of American politics and some of us are still buying it.

Absinthe! (more specifically the thujone in the wormwood.) It has been legalized off and on, but you basically can't find it in the US anymore non-detoxified.
It's be given a rap it doesn't deserve, people assumed taking it will make you trip out like your on LSD and see "the green fairy". I can honestly say from a great deal of use, no, that doesn't happen.
I would put it more on par of the drunk one acquires from wine but more severe. Happy, euphoric, giggly. Occasionally it causes light visual disturbances. Think, "the room is pulsing..."
I couldn't seem to even find an outright explanation of why it was banned.
You can however still find wormwood growing wild in pretty much every state. (Being that I live in Alaska I do mean every state.) it's also very easy to to grow. Wormwood is not illegal, turning it into absinthe is, at least that's my understanding...

The difference in the dose of absinthe that makes you high and the dose that kills you is so close that it would be murder if it were made legal. People who do drugs have no sense of right and wrong, and they aren't above taking more of something thinking it will make them feel better. Absinthe killed many people in Europe when it was popular. To make it legal would be irresponsible.

Nope.
"We now know that the wormwood in absinthe contains far less thujone than once believed and that amounts are much too small to pose any health threat. Current thinking holds that wormwood isn't at all dangerous, and that any ill-effects of absinthe are due to alcoholism, not to any specific brain toxicity associated with its use."

"People who believed that absinthe was dangerous pointed to a chemical compound known as thujone which is present in wormwood. Thujone is in fact quite dangerous, but only in extremely high quantities. Wormwood extract, for example, could have a level of wormwood which is high enough to cause severe health problems, but traditionally produced absinthe contains thujone in only trace amounts which do not appear to pose a health risk. In some countries, the thujone content of absinthe is tightly regulated, in the hopes of keeping concentrations very low."

I could keep going. Even drinking an entire bottle of absinthe is not going to kill you. Perhaps drinking straight wormwood extract would, but that's not even illegal. People that "do drugs" do have a sense of right and wrong. Caffeine is a drug, do you feel everyone who drinks coffee has no sense of right and wrong? Absinthe didn't kill those people, addiction to alcohol did. Absinthe is just another alcohol. The same way driving a car can kill you if you do so irresponsibly, drinking can too. We cannot just ban everything that could hurt someone if used irresponsibly.

We already have two legal drugs that are killing millions of people every year...alcohol and tobacco. Why would we want to add another to that list? There is no drug that is currently illegal that would benefit society if it was made legally available to everyone on an unlimited basis like cigarettes and alcohol are.
There are two things that I can see being made legally available by prescription: Cannabinol, because it has been proven to be beneficial in diseases like glaucoma and for pain in terminal cancer patients and Ephedra, because taken properly, it is very beneficial in the treatment of asthma.
