Nope, I wouldn't do it, but I know many people who have--maybe I'm hanging out with the wrong crowd :)

I just know that I wouldn't feel right about it ... not to mention that I wouldn't enjoy the event the night before for fear of ripping or spilling something on the dress and being unable to return it! Also, hiding the tag against your skin inside the dress would be pretty uncomfortable.

In addition, I wouldn't like to be the person trying on a dress in a store after someone has worn it all night (smoky, sweaty, perfumy). I guess some people might dryclean the dress, but most probably wouldn't because drycleaning is expensive too!

In the end, I think I would rather buy from a store more in my price range or a more upmarket store having a sale. I'd even check out the thrift shops over buying a dress knowing that I would return it after use ... but that's just me.

Let me preface this by saying first: I'm not a woman. This fact either entitles me to a neutral opinion, or perhaps no opinion at all.

I think, if I knew that I would get away with it, I would probably do this. Women are being asked to pay some pretty exorbitant prices for dresses these days. Particularly stressful is the fact that you may only wear the dress once, which can make it quite difficult to justify spending several thousand dollars for a one-night premiere of the dress. With that kind of nearly-criminal pricing, I find it hard to feel bad about returning a dress that's well out of your price range.

If, however, you have the option to rent a dress, this seems more appropriate. Nobody at the event you're attending needs to know the dress is a rental, and you can keep a clear conscience (as well as a clear bank account if they had no intention of accepting your return).

I don't know if I'd do it, but my mom did it once time.

She'd recently separated from my dad and was broke, and she needed to attend a special awards ceremony in order accept an award for academic achievement that they didn't know was going to get plowed right into past-due utility and rent bills, but she didn't have anything good enough to wear for the occasion.

So she did that. She found an outfit good enough, and used it, and returned it the next day after getting it drycleaned I presume.

The thing is... it was *such* a pricy dress that, evidently, the shop was not unacustomed to items being returned, in the name of impulse buying.

Yep!

If I could afford to go around buying dresses and keeping them then I would, but for now I think I'd have to stick with returning it ;)

NOTE: I am a guy, but the idea is still the same. My answer is a resounding NO. I have never tried to “cheat” any system, and I do not look very well upon those who do. The way the world works is, if you can afford it, get it. If you cannot, don't. The problem is that so few people subscribe to this. Everyone wants to project an image of what they really are not, but want to be, instead of actually working to accomplish a goal in life. If you make 8.00 an hour, shop at Target or Kmart. If you make 100k a year, shop at department stores. In my opinion, someone who is proud of who they are and what they believe in would NOT buy something and wear it with the INTENTION to take it back and receive a “free ride” of sorts. To me, it's a low-down, sneaky thing to do, and it reflects on how that person would treat other areas in life. Getting something for nothing is no way to live. It really isn't. :)

Obviously that is cheating, we might be able to return it and get away from the stand point of the shop owner, but we won't be able to get away without consequences from our ever present judge and jury, that's our guilt and conscience. so in that case i won't return that which i have already bought and used, unless it is defective then i will return it by all means.

No, I would not do it. For the fact that it is just wrong and because I would not want to buy someone elses used dress, especially when I am thinking it is new and paying a new price. So I wouldn't do that to anyone else.
I try to live my life by thinking about other people and how I would feel if it were me. Sure I would have a the perfect dress for the night and not have to spend the money for it, but in turn someone would be buying a dress they think is new, that is really just my hand me down cheat dress. It is not fair to the person who does buy it for the right reasons and it is not fair to the shop owner who is just trying to run his or her business.

Personally I wouldn't as I haven't got the legs for it, and I'm worried I'd clash with my wife.....

But to take the question more seriously, I don't think you should. It feels like stealing, and its like buying a cake from a bakery, licking the frosting and then handing it back.
