If your room mate told you they didn't have their share of the rent what would you do?

After two months your room mate can't pay their share of the rent so you agree to pay it this time. A week later you see her wearing a new outfit, what would you do?

Depending on the circumstances, I would ask her for some sort of collateral, pay that month’s rent out of my own pocket, and establish a written agreement (signed by us and a witness) that she would pay the following months rent all by herself. I would give her this chance, because financial hurdles can happen in anybody’s life at some time, especially now. If it had happened to me, I would expect her to at least try to help me out as well and not give up on me when the first disaster struck. However, if her situation continued or I felt she was taking advantage of my kindness and did not do anything to resolve her conflict, I would have to make it clear that we could no longer remain roommates, since I would be compromising my own living situation while having to pay double the rent each month. I guess her wearing a new outfit would somewhat fall into this category and I would have to approach her and say" Oh great, looks like you were able to straighten your situation out. Just in time, because it looks like I will be a little short on the rent next month"...

If the lease was in my name I would give her one month to clean up her act and if she did not I would ask her to leave. Especially if she did not pay me back and has the obvious stupidity to flaunt new clothes in your face. I have actually been in that situation. Ex roomie hated me for a while and about six months later after I kicked her out she said she didn't blame me.

Ask her to put herself in your shoes and try not to make it a situation where she immediately becomes defensive.

Good luck!

If her name isn't on the lease, boot her out now. No need for notice. You've got nothing in writing to back up your agreements. Done.

Don't make it more complicated than it is. They have no problem with taking advantage of you, why should you put up with all the reasons and excuses? You'll be glad you severed the relationship early.
