I think it would be to your best interest to go above and beyond the call at work. But before you choose to do this you should think first if you will be happy doing more or going an extra mile so that you won't get too stressed out or burnout and that would be unhealthy for you.
So, why did I think it would be at your best interest to go above and beyond the call at work? This is a great opportunity for growth. Because there might be tasks that you will be given which you are not familiar with. So, you are going to learn from doing them.
You will impress your boss and he will think that you are hardworking, reliable and can do multi-tasking. That is the trend today. We should not only limit ourselves to our work but to explore so that it would be hard for our employer to let go of us especially during this time of recession where there are many job cuttings done in certain companies.
Basically, you are showing the kind of character you have by the quality as well as the quantity of work you are doing. But as I have said, too much is not also good. You can go an extra mile but be sure that extra work you are going to accept is not causing you too much stress and that you will be able to finish the task on time. Otherwise, you will not be able to complete tasks as expected and that would be then a disadvantage for you.

YES, going over and above the call of duty at work is a good way to bring yourself to the attention of your boss and possibly the bosses above him or her.
You can conscientiously do a better job or add something to your project that would benefit the company, and then quietly be sure that the right people know about it.
I don't think you will be taken advantage of unless you let extra work get out of hand and be expected from you all the time.
Just be careful, but be cheerful and do your very very best possible job in order to be seen as a good candidate for promotion when the time comes.
