Nietzsche wrote about an idea he called the "overman," and stated, in essence, that people should always look to be better versions of themselves. When self-improvement stops, the essence of the person begins to die.

I am definitely happier with my life now than I was last year, or the year before. Each part of my life has gotten better. However, there are things I want to do, things I want to do a better job at, and goals I need to work on (and goals I need to set!). I don't think that working on improvement can't be done with a sense of satisfaction in there too.
