What does it say about our society that CNN devotes front page space to Jon and Kate's battle over birthday cakes?

You're mistaken: It's not that people CARE, it's that they're FASCINATED. There's really quite a big difference between those. You see to care means that I would feel deep emotions for this family.
There's no emotion coming from Gno here. It's all a big specatcle that is exploding spectacularly. I watched the show back when it was just a junky reality show with nothing really special about it. Now seeing them absolutely self-destruct from their own self-righteousness?
It's a thing of beauty.
Plus, whenever my life gets me down, I can always look at them and think, "Well, at least I'm not a Gosselin."
They're very life affirming.

I think that John and Kate are now separated, they have become bigger news. It wouldnt surprise me a bit if they were not really separated in real life.
He flaunts his girlfriend and takes the money out of the account and now they are fighting over birthday cakes?! Please these people need to crawl in a hole somewhere and raise their kids.
I read an article at the beginning of their separation where her exboyfriend said that she was a cheater and a gold digger. Also that all that healthy stuff she eats is new because when they were dating it was french fries, hamburgers, and ruby tuesdays all the time.
so What do I think? I think that I don't care how badly they treat other. neither one is intelligent enough to protect their children from all this. If they were kate would never had agreed to continue the show. How will her kids have a normal life now. It was bad enough that they have been exploited all this time. Now they will be exploited again in front of the cameras while they try to adjust to the mess created by their parents.

I have no idea why people care. I live in a very nearby town from them and to be honest, I never even heard of them until not all that long ago. Shows what I pay attention to. Maybe it's good that I didn't know who they were.

Personally I don't care. My grandma raised nine daughters, a son and she had a small family compared to her mothers.
But really...some people just like to watch the world burn!
No, really its one of those things you just can't help but watch or hear about. Does it mean people are evil and do not care about soldiers over seas? No, but it does show that people like to watch things that make them feel better about themselves. it could be like hey i'm getting a divorce, but at least i didn't lose a show and have 8 kids.

Jon and Kate was an insanely popular reality show, so the media has their latest obsession. People are addicted to celebrities and reality stars, so the obsession wont end. Personally I think Jon and Kate (and more importantly: the children) deserve privacy. It's unfair for the paparazzi to stalk them this badly.

My lord, I have to agree with the top response!
As a show, I can see how people can get into it, and begin to care for the characters, as we can with any good book.
But is it CNN news? NO way. My mother recently died, and was a better person than either Jon or Kate! CNN didn't care about that, though.
It's “shock jock” crap, and it needs to end. Once again, people who make horrible decisions and screw up multiple lives become famous for it – even idolized?
Gimmie a break.
