In my opinion, I think what Larry Johnson said in the locker room to reporters qualifies as offensive, I personally would hold it against him, but i find it equally as offensive, and perhaps even more worrisome, that a person can be suspended, fired, silenced or what have you, so easily. The concept of freedom of speech implies that one will hear in their lifetime what one agrees with as well as what one disagrees with, with what compliments and what insults.

The moment implied threats are passed down to limit the notion of free speech, to attempt to engineer it to social norms, it is no longer free speech. People are free to say what they want to say as long as it is not slander or an announcement with intent to harm. If this costs him endorsement deals, so be it! If this harms his reputation with fans, so be it! But to have the NFL suspend him, or his own team, that is an over reaction that at first seems nice, how wonderful, they are all banding together and being sensitive, but after it sinks in should scare you to your bones.

I found it offensive, I'm sure the majority of people found what he said offensive, let us harbor our negative opinion of him, let us boo him if we want to, advertisers cut his endorsements, but, NFL, don't meddle with free speech. You're a sports league, not the Supreme Court.

i agree with @marisaupa.... I mean, I don't understand suspending someone for what they say. However, if they have signed a contract that has a morals clause, then he would/should know he signed that, and he should be held to that and the punitive measures to enforce that.

That said, I would never personally sign a morals clause that prohibited my free speech.

Was what he said offensive? Yeah, it truly was.... but people are offensive all the time, to someone, and most of them don't get fired, suspended, fined, etc., for it.

I guess those in the limelight are just held to different standards...
