I'm pretty luck. I own a writer's forum so when a flame war starts, I just lock and delete the thread!
For the most part, I avoid flame wars, but if there is an error in fact and my name is mentioned, I might correct the error. I also have a tendency to protect people I care about, so if someone attacks or degrades a 'friend', I'll usually say something then too.
I much prefer running the show on my board where I can just kick the thread off and the poster too, if necessary.

I usually pick up the side of the underdog depending on the subject. Some times I don't even agree, I just enjoy seeing how many people I can convince.
I really enjoy a good debate, and when someone is just getting reamed it makes me feel better to know I made their day by sticking it to whoever was flaming them.
I stay out of the stupid ones though, or try to re-direct the thread.

I stay out entirely. I used to engage them, and you always stay mad. They're not about understanding each other's side: they're about venting and raging. Actually, I posted something here a few days ago about religion that I think has some people ticked, but I'm choosing not to read their responses, so I'll probably never know! lol Life is short. You don't know the people on the internet. Move on.
