No, standardized tests do not indicate the abilities of an individual student. They are in no way designed for this purpose.
Standardized testing is designed to report on average abilities and knowledge. Standardized testing exists to form a "baseline".
Individuals can rank their own scores against that of the baseline, but in reality, this is not an accurate measure of the abilities or knowledge of that individual. This comparison only ranks the student against this average - nothing else.

I don't think standardized tests really indicate a student's abilities. The questions are typically multiple choice and don't measure the ability of a student to think or create in any field. These tests do not test a student's ability to think or do things in a practical manner so this outdated method of testing the ability of a student is inaccurate.

There are some students who have disabilities such as dyslexia that will affect the outcome of standardized tests. They can be given verbally, but that does affect the standard part of standardized. There are also students who simply do not take tests well, stress, anxiety, boredom or a lack of interest in the outcome can affect the results as well. Children do not come in size “standard,” so it seems to me that there can be no standardized test.

Are standardized tests a true measure of a student's abilities? The answer is absolutely no. Speaking from experience, I was a highschool student ranked in the top 10% of my class and I did poorly on my SAT's. Although the school I attended does consider these tests, there are other factors to consider when determining abilites. Needless to say, because of my previous academic history and college interview, I was able to get into one of the leading Liberal Arts schools in the Northeast.
Today, I am employed as a Business Systems Analyst with one of the leading IT firms in the country. So much for standardized tests.
