It depends. If it's just me and my direct family I'd keep it casual. However, if we have other family members and friends over I'd dress up somewhat. Nothing too fancy, somewhere in between that's still casual but not too dressed down or dressed up. Christmas is for everyone regardless of what they dress like. It's the inside that really matters.

We always go casual, although I might put on my best jeans and a good top instead of my usual grubbies. About the only time any of us dress up is for church, weddings and funerals. Heck, the last funeral we went to, the family requested that everyone wear jeans! It was a biker funeral for our best friend.

We tend to go casual. Nice jeans, some sort of dress shirt, and a sweater is about as dressy as anyone gets. It's still more formal than I grew up with (shorts and flip flops), but it's also a lot colder in Ohio than the California/Mexico border!

We don't bother to dress up, because it's just my mother, my grandmother, my sister and I. We see each other all the time -- why do we have to dress up for each other? It's just extra work for not much reward. And more to the point, it's just a day spent staying in.
The above explains why I spent Christmas Day for the past three years in my flannel pajamas.

This year I will have a casual Christmas. It will be only myself and my significant other. Other years, when the whole family gathers, we have had formal Christmas dinners. as well as casual ones. That is always determined by how many layers of extended family are expected. Usually, the more the distant the relatives that are expected, the more formality that we have employed. When it is just my siblings, our spouses/significant others, and my parents any attempt at formality goes out the window.
Personally, I enjoy a casual Christmas more than the formal affair.

Florida is a very casual state and we live a casual lifestyle. So casual dress is the norm at our house, whether for a special occasion dinner or hamburgers on the grill. We usually invite people we know who don't have any plans for Thanksgiving or Christmas, and most of them either don't have dressy clothes or won't wear them. The exception would be our 2-year-old granddaughter, who likes to dress up. Around the first of December, I replace the dishes in the cabinet with my fine Christmas china and sterling silverware. I do get some grumbling, but I think it adds to the festivity of the season. That may be inconsistent with the casual atmosphere, but that's the way we like it.
