Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
Women who get pregnant while in the military can now be court-martialed. Is this ethical? Does this change whether or not you'd join?
Yes, men who get women pregnant will be punished by court-martial as well. The claim is that each soldier is needed and no one should have a reason to leave active service early.

I read the article yesterday and wondered the same thing myself. I understand why the General did it, to keep all of his soldiers in war ready condition. When you have to constantly turn over personnel due to pregnancy issues, this is a problem. You can't get the type of cohesive unit that you will need. But a woman is not going to get pregnant just because she is a woman and in the military. The media just likes to highlight the ones that do something to oppose what's going on (like that one female soldier that refused deployment some months ago because of her son. Mothers or Fathers in the military that have child care issues, that inform the military of the problem, are often worked with. You do not find out a week before you deploy that you are going. You find out months before and are given time to get your affairs in order, including child care issues.
Rape also happens to women soldiers in the military. 80% of rapes are acquaintance rapes. So should this happen to a soldier and she becomes pregnant then have to worry about going to jail because of it?
The interesting part too was that the General wasn't just targeting women. He is also targeting men that impregnate women. Though, I don't know how he will really prove that one. The "Maury Povitch" show is rife with men yellin "Dat ain't mah baby! You a hoe!" (sorry I may have watched one too many episodes while pregnant and sick in bed). But that is the mantra of many men when they find out that their girlfriend, fling, or whatever is carrying a child. To find out if the men or women are being truthful, you need a dna test. I want to see the Sgt. Major get a paternity test for every male accused of impregnating a woman. Of course, a pregnant woman is easy to target.
The General unfortunately does have a point. There are many woman who try to get out of deployment - not just to war zones - by becoming pregnant. Having been a Navy wife for over 12 years (hubby is retired now), I have heard all the stories.
The problem of course is also that the General also made it punishment for married couples in the same unit. How do you prove failed contraception over intentional impregnation for these soldiers? Should they then not be allowed to have sex as a married couple?
Overall, this will never fly. It's not legal and he is getting backlash from it already. The marines tried it once before and it didn't work then. I don't know why he thought it would work now. Military brass delusions of grandeur I imagine.

I do not believe that this is an ethical or wise decision on the part of the military. There are plenty of military jobs that do not require deployment and a pregnant soldier can be trained to serve in one of the many administrative positions. There are many who make their military service their career. Are we asking that those who want to serve their country, refrain from marriage and family? That is asking them to choose between serving their country or having the opportunity to have a family. I think that it will affect many Americans in their decision to serve. What about those that are already serving, married and have children? Will we eventually see an army of single and childless Americans? While I can understand the governments concern for those leaving active duty for leave due to a pregnancy, are those few months worth a decline in enlistment because of the consequences pregnancy may cause? I am a mother, and I was a mother who served in the military. And if anything, my son was a reason to excel and succeed. If I were to have been sent overseas, he would also be my reason to make sure that I come home safely.

When you are training killers, whether to protect yourself or attack others, do you really want them to be judging their decisions because they have a family, instead of protecting you?
When you spend thousands to train these killers (after all that is what the military is for) do you want all your tax money wasted because they become pregnant, instead of being ready, willing and able to go to war?
These VOLUNTEERS join the armed services and have sworn to protect you AT ANY COST! By getting pregnant they are no longer able to fulfill, and have broken that promise!
I think it should be clear, the military is NOT a career, like deciding to become a doctor or a lawyer or even a beautician.
The military is a KILLING machine, even it's defence capabilities is based on killing other human beings. it is not just 'another job' to be taken lightly. (Isn't that why you have to swear allegiance?)
As a side note I don't think it is 'ethical' for a woman to join a private company, having thousands spent on her training, only to PLAN and get pregnant, after the company has invested so much, then not be able to dedicate as much time and effort back to that company!

There are many jobs in the military that are not directly protecting us with guns pointed at enemies. There is also alot of paper pushing that goes on. There are plenty of posts for pregnant women that are in the military.
The military is a career and can be quite a good one. There are many specialties in the military and you get free training. The caveat is that you are serving your country. My nephew is in the navy and he is a journalist. Last time I checked that was a career out of the military as well. There are musicians that enlist that do nothing but play in the military band their entire career. They serve in a different function. If you are good with languages, there is a great need for people who can speak and learn different languages for cartography. There are engineers, construction personnel, ministers and priests, IT people, and a host of other careers available in the military.
Now, I also don't necessarily advocate that everyone run out and join because once in the military you are subject to military rules and regulations. You are not free to do some things as you would in a nonmilitary career (like leave the job when you no longer like it). Some of the jobs I mentioned have small applicant pools. Oh I should mention too that another distant family member joined the navy many years ago and played basketball for the for his entire service time. I don't know if that one is still available though.

If you qualify, the military will pay for medical school, law school, engineering school, etc. You are then required to give a certain amount of time to the military after that but the trade off is no loans I suppose.
Being a soldier probably isn't a career for life but there are many careers available in the military - just with the whole - you are in the military and belong to Uncle Sam caveat.
