Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum

Are you affected by the moon? Do you notice other people being affected by that lunar orb in the sky?

On MSNBC.MSN.COM the article, "Moon myths: How real are lunar health effects?" states that with all the studies conducted no conclusive evidence can be found that proves a connection between human behavior and the moon. Studies and proof are one thing, experience is another. What do you think?

I see and feel a difference based on moon cycle. It's subtle, so it's understandable that many people might not even notice--unless they were watching for it. But I am a practicing witch. I follow the moon cycles to help to know when to harvest herbs and when to plant. It is part of witchcraft, and even plain gardening lore that dates back millennia. For the best plantings and the best potency, always plant when the moon is waxing and harvest when the moon is waning.

Likewise, on a full moon I am very aware of the changes in people. They are more easily riled up, in both positive and negative ways. They take more chances. They are less inhibited. I love to people watch on full moons. And likewise, I feel as a witch that my power and connection with the universe is at its greatest on the full moon. Just to give you an idea, I set out my best charms and amulets on the full moon to soak up its light. Very powerful stuff. And I too like to soak in the full moon's light. It's uplifting.

Before I was a witch, many years ago, I might've smirked and shifted my eyes over an answer like this. But even back then I always noticed something was a little different on full moons.

The next full moon is this Sunday, October 4. I hope you all enjoy it! Happy people watching!

I don't think that the phase of the moon directly affects me, but I do think that normal circadian cycles (which are not tied to lunar cycles, exactly) do affect me. On the other hand, in talking with forum moderators and monitoring forum traffic during full moon and new moon phases, it does seem that there is a greater tendency toward the inane. Based on all the credible studies which I have been able to find, however, it does appear that behaviors tied to the phase of the moon seem to be an urban myth.

I would have to be pretty bored to bother watching people during various phases of the moon!

It has been long studied and known that "lunacy" has nothing to do with the moon,
except, possibly, as a drunken or an expectant reflex
(Caveman: "Me see bright circle in sky! Me scared! Me hide in cave, man!"
Modern Day Man: "Look at that bright moon! How nice! Oops! I crashed into a tree!").

Of course, since most such studies are probably done at taxpayer expense,
one has to wonder who is the real "lunatic":
the researcher for bothering to study such nonsense
or the person who authorized the "study"!

If you don't mind my own, free, hypothesis:
it is likely that, during more ancient times,
when street lighting (i.e., fueled torches) was not common or available,
the only time criminals, homeless, "lunatics",
and ne'er-do-wells could be seen and caught was when it was bright out;
given this question, that would occur only during the full moon,
as most "bad" people would hide during the day.
Naturally, the increased ability of the authorities to see during the full moon created
a coincidental correspondence to the number of "bad" people caught during those times;
in other words, they weren't "bright" enough to associate the two facts.
Hence, there is nothing mystical or magical about the moon, except for its visibility,
which, in and of itself, is certainly magical!

My grandmother used to always say my father was a moonchild, and I never knew what that meant until I was older. She explained it to me that it was like women who get their 'monthly visitor', only it's the men's version...LOL Anyway, he got all pissy every month, and that was her excuse.

As I've gotten older, I've paid attention to things where the moon is concerned, because it's been said to affect a woman's cycle... I don't really have to worry about that anymore, but it's curious that there is that strong correlation between women's cycles and the moon.

There's some interesting information about that on this site:

http://www.menstruation.com.au/periodpages/mooncycles.html

This website has some interesting information, but it also has this sentence in bold:

----Quote:

"Yet such stories are largely anecdotal. Most scientific research has failed to prove them true."

----/Quote

That would indicate the MSNBC story and this site agree that any evidence is anecdotal, but there are so many stories that you tend to think something must be to the story.

Still, I haven't ever personal felt or noticed anything...

My dad is a retired commercial airline pilot. He flew for over 30 years, back in the early days of the industry. He always used to say to us, "oh man, I've got a full moon flight" and told us that with great reliability, passengers were always much more agitated and that something unusual typically happened during the full moon phase. He is a man of science but he certainly had years of experience of how the full moon seemed to impact groups and individuals on his aircraft.

I do not feel they affect me personally. However I did notice when the moon was full the residents at the nursing home were affected. On the dementia unit there were more folks up wandering on full moon night on average, it did not matter if they seen the moon or not.
