Civil disobedience is a time honored option for protesting outrageously unfair power plays like raising tuition 32% in one fell swoop. As a college parent, there's no way my kids could afford to remain in school at that rate. It's absolutely ridiculous. The regents that voted for such robbery deserved to have their meeting disrupted, they actually deserve to be removed from their positions. Can you imagine a 32% increase in your rent?

I think the students are being whiney babies.

As was explained in the sublink in the story you cited:
Unless the students are from out of state, that is not tuition they are being charged. It is a registration fee. It just covers the university's expenses.
The University of California is a public school. It gets most of its money from the state.
The State of California is 44 billion dollars in debt. Half of the State's expenses go to public education. The state is mandated to provide Kindergarten - 12th grade education. The state does not have to provide college education. Up to now, it has been. We taxpayers want it to please stop. We already pay too much in taxes.
