Do you buy from companies with bad labor or manufacturing policies?

Apple has been under the spotlight recently for making their products in dangerous, crowded factories in China that pay little, employ children, and sometimes force workers to do shifts lasting more than 24 hours (resulting in several deaths). The people producing iPods are suffering greatly for Apple to rake in record profits.

Do you consider a company's manufacturing or labor standards when you purchase items? Or do you care most about the quality and cost of the product?

Truthfully, when I hear a story like what you just mentioned I will not buy that product. That is so sad. The Apple company makes so much money, that is ridiculous. At the same time, we all know what happens when they move factories overseas. They can get alot more out of workers and pay so much less. I am sure this is not the only company this is happening with. I am glad you have brought the details and story to us all.

I personally will not give them a dime of my money.
At this point, price will not matter. I will not support a company that does not realize they need the employees to be up and standing, and doing so well.

Otherwise I typically do always look at price. I am very frugal and some may even say cheap.

It all depends on what product I'm purchasing. If I'm buying a shirt, I want it to be made in Italy. I don't care what it costs - a second or third rate country just won't do!

However, if I'm buying something like a computer, I absolutely don't care. As long as quality control is high, that's all that matters. I deserve a huge amount of credit for taking this position. Some people say that they 'always' want to buy from ethical companies, but I freely admit that I only care in certain circumstances.

I'm probably going to be the only answerer of this question who doesn't lie in their post. None of us really care about these employees, and it's hypocritical to act like we do.

Hm, jkepler. I don't ever lie in my posts, so I won't today either. For a start I would NEVER buy an Apple computer, an iPod or an i.... whatever. I read through the specifications of the Apple products more than once and it's not what I want, not what I need and in fact, I find all Apple products completely useless. But of course, one is not allowed to say that.

As to what I'm buying, if I can get it second hand on a fleamarket, I will buy it there and the question of green or alternative or fair trade doesn't enter into it.

If I buy new, like a netbook or a mobile or a smartphone, I will buy the one where the specifications suit me best and that is difficult at the best of times and what the IP support and offer on contract. So I don't have much of a choice here either.

If it's a kitchen gadget, I will buy "made in Germany" as everything else is a disappointment in the long run and if it's clothes, I don't care where they come from, as long as they are natural fiber. Cotton, wool, linen, angora, flax, home tanned leather, whatever, artificial fiber are unhealthy.

Other than that, I do not need ANY gadgets made in China or clothes or plastic shoes, nobody does. I do not need washing powder, washing up liquid, shampoos, perfumes, air fresheners, nail varnish or make-up and all the rest of the chemical products that are on offer. I make my own shampoo and own soap from ingredients as natural as I can find them.

With food it's even worse, I try to grow most of it myself, but try to tell somebody that you really do it, meat and all, you get judged. I don't care anymore. And I certainly don't need honey from China and lamb from New Zealand that's traveled via plan half around the world.

In the long run my only aim is to be healthy and I will do what it takes.

For the ones that wish to stop child labor in China and prostitution in Thailand etc. I would like to say that they should go there and judge for themselves and help if they can, I have certainly investigated the facts.
