Guerilla protest musicals: cool new method or same old thing?
If I hear one more protest featuring "No justice no peace" Or "what do we want?" "When do we want it?" I may give up on protesters completely . I saw this video of protesters acting out a musical number with changed words to fit their cause, and wonder if anyone finds it interesting, or is it just more of the same, in your opinion?

Depends on how viral it goes. This might be a bad example, because of the outcome, but it sure was a great try: When there was the controversy over Proposition 8 in California, a lot of celebrities (Jack Black, for instance) got together and put together "Proposition 8: The Musical." It didn't keep Prop 8 from passing, of course, but it was brilliantly produced (you have to admit this, no matter what your politics) and got MAJOR buzz while still making its points.

To me, there are two things that a protest musical would have to have:
- Substance. If it's fluffy, it might get buzz, and people might like it, but it won't have any chance of changing anyone's mind; it'd be, as someone else said, just "preaching to the choir." Have your talking points. Point out the logical errors. Make your case. But also...
- Catchiness. Quality. It's got to be a great musical! It's harder to argue with something if it keeps running through your head, after all. You don't necessarily need big-name songwriters, just a knowledge of what sounds good.

Clever, eye catchy, but ultimately videos of this will likely be passed around to people that share their views. IE preaching to the choir.
Is it interesting, yup.
Clever, yup.
Effective . . . well it did get air time on CNN so I guess it couldn't hurt.
. . . and it is better then another "Heck no we won't go!" ^_^
