Should prostitution be legalized?

I know that, in Nevada, under certain circumstances, brothels are allowed to operate, but I'm talking nationwide. What if it was government regulated and taxed? Is it really hurting anyone?

Although I wouldn't recommend it as a profession, I do think it should be legalized and regulated. Mostly because it has been around forever and is not something that is going to go away.

There are many women (and men) who are prostitutes, either by choice or out of necessity. It is a dangerous profession on many levels. If it were regulated, it would help those who are working in that profession. Would hopefully make it safer for everyone - all participants.

Regulation of prostitution would be quite an adjustment for everyone involved....

Even if it were legalized there would still be the dirty crack addict whore in the street. But every state is not Neveda and how many people would want it in their community. Legalizing it would make it cost more and people would still go to the street for the discount prices. Who does it hurt? The people dying of aids and those with social deseases and the broken homes. Just becausse it's legal doesn't mean every housewife would condone or accept it.

The question "should prostitution be legalized" is entirely tooo broad. There are some people who make a legitimate choice to become a prostitute because it allows them enough money to do something they like. (I know someone in Amsterdam who worked as a (legal) prostitute to put herself through medical school, because the work was reasonably pleasant and better paid than other jobs available. She was even part of a union. On the other hand there are people who do not choose it willingly - children or teenagers who run away from home and have no other resources, drug addicts, and of course the sexual slavery you sometimes see in the developing world.

Prostitution should be legal when it is an actual choice made by the prostitute to engage in prostitution. Where it is not a free choice (as in the case of drug addicts), we should either offer the social services necessary to *make it a free choice, or if this is not possible then prostitution should not be legal in those circumstances.

I understand that not everyone approves of prostitution. They don't have to. Just because something is legalized doesn't mean everyone has to engage in it. Alcohol is legal but some people think drinking is immoral and so choose to abstain, without requiring the whole societ to abstain for reasons of private morality. If someone disproves of prostitution, it is completely within his her rights to abstain herself, and to convince his or her partner to abstain as well.

Prostitution should be legal and regulated just as Marijuana should also be. They are both never going to go away and can be beneficial (if managed correctly) to a community that has them as a source of income. People who are on drugs and have diseases go to public places like the movies, hotels, libraries, and work in places like restaurants, hospitals, and schools and you don't stop going there or shut those places down because of them. Sex is a good thing (healthy) and if you're in need, and there is a (CLEAN/Healthy) pretty girl or guy willing to give it to you for a reasonable price and the money will keep fuel in the economy it shouldn't be stopped because of drug users or diseased people either. Yes, legalize prostitution and ~regulate it correctly~ and watch America change for the better.

Making prostitution (by consenting adults) legal with required health department checkups would bring much needed tax dollars in to the economy. It would also make it safer for the john because the girl would be medically clean and use protection, and it would make it safer for the girl because the john would have been checked out. The girls would not have pimps because they would not need them. It would be run as a business just like many escort services try to do. Forcing someone in to prostitution would be illegal and drug addicts would still be arrested for prostitution. It is definitely the oldest profession in the world, and I'm sure many movie stars, doctors, lawyers, and other professionals have used it in some way to get where they were going. The brothels that are legal in Nevada made sure the girls are tested regularly. They operate as a family unit and take care of each other. I don't see why there is such a negative attitude about this profession, when it is done voluntarily, when millions of girls are giving it away free to anyone and everyone with no protection. This is why STDs and other diseases are on the rise. Prostitutes with addictions should be helped rather than jailed. They are being enslaved both by their addictions and their pimps and often can't find a way out. They end up getting abused, getting and transmitting diseases, and sometimes dying at the hands of a client or their pimp. If it were regulated a lot of these problems would be eliminated and the tax bank would be increased!!

P.S. And as for it occuring in your neighborhoods, believe me it exists more than you know.

THIS IS THE OLDEST PROFESSION IN THE WORLD AND I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE LEGALIZED AND TAXED,THERE IS TOO MUCH MONEY GOING TO STOP SOMETHING THAT IS INEVITABLE,IF I WANT TO SPEND MY MONEY ON A PROSTITUTE WHY IS IT THE GOVERNMENTS BUSINESS?IF THE GOVERNMENT WOULD MAKE IT LEGAL AND TAX IT,IT WOULD MAKE A LOT OF BUDGET PROBLEMS FOR THE CITIES TO DISAPPEAR.THE BEST WAY TO FIGHT THIS IS TO LEGALIZE IT,TAX IT,AND REGULATE IT.

As a recent graduate with a degree in English, I am hardly employed. Maybe I could get a job as a government pimp. I hope it's a federal job. They have the best benefits.

Prostitution should NOT be legalized.

But, I not going to call all of you sinners and tell you that hell is waiting. Lol.

Instead of legalizing prostitution, I would recommend dismantling the system which fuels it. Legalized prostitution has not led to an increase of the professionalism of the industry, instead it has criminalized elements which still circumvent the laws which are created. Germany, the Netherlands, and parts of Greece have legalized it, and have found that they have had an increase in problems stemming from illicit prostitution and human trafficking. Germany has recognized that only a few (hundreds, out of nearly 400,000) have taken full advantage of the legal system. Sweden has pioneered a new model of approaching prostitution, in which they have decriminalized the position of prostitute, but have introduced stiff penalties for "johns" participating in pay-for-sex. They have generally seen a sharp decrease in prostitution.

The other main question for myself is whether or not a prostitute is truly "free" to make his/her own choice. If not forced outrightly (slavery/trafficking), often there is a social or economic element that is pushing these individuals into this profession. If I am a drug addict, have little skills and therefore resort to sex-for-hire, am I being forced into this profession? In my mind, the clear answer is yes.

One piece of this that I can't get away from, is the tax element. If there were taxes imposed upon each transaction, that would generate income for the state collecting the tax. However, there is a cost element as well. How much is a prostitute charged for a "license"? How much are the ongoing medical costs? Are the sex acts priced by the hour or a la carte? Should those costs be regulated? By a state, city, county? How much for tax? Once all of these costs are decided upon, is the amount a john would pay still reasonable, or has the cost be driven too high? For low level street prostitutes, these costs would simply be too high and would only continue to drive the illicit side of the trade.

Instead of stigmatizing and criminalizing these individuals who are forced into this profession, we should be protecting them, investigating cases of forced prostitution and human trafficking, as well as providing retraining services to individuals trapped in a cycle of oppression. The costs involved to regulate this trade would be too high if done properly, and thus an illicit trade would simply be fueled by legalizing prostitution.

this is truly a conundrum. NO it should not be "legalized", taxed and regulated by the government, but simply put it shouldn't be against the law for me to meet someone at a time and place i see fit and They decided to pay me after having sex. why is it any of your business what i am being paid for when it is between two consenting adults. It is my business. An example, I am a 21 year old who met someone in the bar, i go back to his place and we have sex after of course having an extensive conversation about what is to be expected and decided that instead of cash he is going to buy me a pack of cigarettes once a week and a case of beer for the next six months. what is the difference, the sad truth buying me stuff is legal giving me the cash to buy it myself illegal. STUPID ISN'T IT.

STOP HASSLING THE ONES THAT CHOOSE TO DO IT (SOBER EDUCATED PEOPLE WHO KNOW THAT SEX WILL NEVER GO OUT OF BUSINESS) AND CRACK DOWN ONLY ON THE HUMAN TRAFFICKERS.

When have you ever heard of a porn star being arrested for an "appearance" :)

Criminalization of Prostitution

In this day and age, where pretty much anything goes and everything is accepted, on what basis is the government criminalizing prostitution? It is harmless business transaction between consenting adults. Why is it criminal because money is involved when the government would completely accept it if there was no money involved? There don't seem to be too many clear thinkers in government these days.

Prostitution is never going to be stopped and frankly I don't see anything wrong with it. The girls that work on the streets do so to fund a drug habit the parlours and agencies won't employ them. The street girls are the cheapest form of prostitution and just a very small percentage of this industry. In every hotel every night of the week women are working as prostitutes with business men. Most of these women get paid around INR 1000/ an hour. The real problem is how to we solve the rampant drug problem this country has and stop women having to work on the streets.

I have lived in the Far East, where prostitution is not seen as anything other than a service. It is an accepted part of the culture. I knew many of the girls as friends and for most of these, prostitution was a means to an end - they wanted out of their situation and this gave them financial means to do that. Personally I have never had the "need" to use the service, but I would have no moral problem if the need did arise.

This concept of the girls being exploited is rubbish - anybody that has to work for a living is being exploited by the owners of that company. If you wish to look at exploitation then look at the youngsters starting out in life being paid INR 1000/ (or less) for work that nobody else will do.

As pointed out criminalising the buying of sex will only create greater opportunities for criminals; whilst doing nothing to increase the safety of those women who make their living within the sex trade. The sole reason largely based on biased studies and tabloid scare stories, rather than being provided with the facts on the issue.

In reality, all independent studies indicate that the policy has been a failure, increased dangers to sex workers and done nothing to tackle the problem of trafficking.

We agree entirely with prostitution being illegal and the men being punished for it, that is not to say the women need to be somehow taken out of that life of exploitation and abuse, be it a jail sentence or a rehabilitation process. We highly disagree with the comment, the welfare system needs to be vastly reduced, surely all the free money given to people who haven’t the drive to get a real job fuels the desire to get some tax free pay by prostituting your body.

You ask "How do men justify it?". Why should they have to justify it? The majority of prostitutes are not trafficked, not violently forced into prostitution. They don't like the job? Most of us don't like our jobs. But, like them, we do it willingly and for the money. And we don't blame our customers for that.

Do these men seriously believe that every Rupee they hand over goes to the women they encounter. Money is taken from these women by pimps or "escort agency fixers" much of it being used to fund organised crime. As for not coming across any trafficked women they are delusional if they think the women are going to tell them, these women are physically abused time and time again, they are mentally traumatised and live in terror of their abusers 24/7.
