Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
What would make you run for local government in your city or town?
Elections are probably coming up where you are. At least, they are here. And one of the topics that always comes up is what made a particular candidate decide to run, especially if he or she is new. Of course, they have campaigns to run that can make them doctor their answers... but you don't! So, what would spur you to run?

If one person asked me to I would. Many of the state and local offices where I live have uncontested elections and therefore only one candidate. One candidate means no choice and no choice is almost without exception an item for further expansion and most certainly an area to look for ways to improve in or on.
I want to run for office some day. Maybe this article ~~>http://www.nhpr.org/node/6685 <~~a how to on the subject will be enough for me to make the jump to a life in the public eye and at the public's service.

Since I have little interest in small time politics, the only thing that would make me run would be a predetermined and large chance of winning. I suppose that means that if I got a petition from several thousand people begging me to run, I'd consider it. Other than some publicity, I just don't know what the benefits would be for me.

I have some things in my past that many people might consider disqualifications for holding public office, even in this day and age (no I haven't killed anyone, nor am I a sex offender).
I think that the only way I would run is if the area I were living in had a high concentration of folks with the same kinds of problems that I have already personally overcome.
Come to think of it, that's probably pretty good advice for anyone considering running for office.

What would make me do it?
Well I think it would only happen if there was a cause that was going to be ignored if I did nothing. Maybe a local school closing or some political cover-up.
In these cases I could imagine me standing up as a single issue candidate. Yes I'd run but the aim would be to make my issue an important one. If I did get elected it would be on the basis that I'd serve a single term to get that issue resolved and when that was done i'd stand down.
