Join someplace that has local activities which allow people to meet in groups. In urban areas, this won't be difficult to find. One of my favorite sites is Plenty of Fish. They emphasize safety (both on-line and in real life) and they provide local venues to meet others in your area in group settings (less pressure and a great way to see how people interact with one another).

PoF also has on-line forums which allow you to share interests and knowledge with others of like mind. The forums can be a very entertaining place and I have made long-term friendships there as well as finding date potentials. Best of all, PoF is *free*!!

Do not include detailed personal information such as home/work address which make you vulnerable for harrassment. Tell the truth about yourself and be clear on the type of guy/girl you are looking for and also the relationship you want, such as Friendship, Short Term Relationship, Long Term Relationship, or Marriage. Upload a down to earth but your best picture.

I recommend a site that has a strong scam detector for a start. Because you will be mad if you find out that the person you meet ends up to be a scam. Try Live Date Search, it is new site that has cool features and scam free.
