Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum

Should Jenny Slate be fired following her use of an F-Bomb (inappropriate F Word) in last night's season premiere of Saturday Night Live?

Jenny Slate said during SNL last night - "You stood up for yourself, and I f---ing love you for that."

Should she be fired for this or not?

No. I don't think she should be fired for an unfortunate mishap.
It happens more often than you might think on live television. Usually there is a short delay for live TV and if someone is paying attention, they can bleep it out.
I'm sure someone in the control room is also getting reamed for this too.

Actually, with todays media, this might help push her out to the front and center of the very competitive cast and crew that makes up SNL.

I say "f&*k it" and move on.
Asker's Rating:
• A quality answer. I agree, the incident is too minor to warrant dismissal. The editors like Bunny says should have bleeped this too. Loved the comment "I say "f&*k it" and move on".

Maybe fined or something. I don't think firing her is necessary. Worse things have been done and said on television.

Personally I do not see why swearing should not be allowed on late night television, however if a show's sponsors pull out or are offended a fine may be appropriate.

I think firing her over one F-bomb would be a terribly knee jerk reaction & I believe that stations should stand up for the right to have more adult humor on late night TV

I very much hope that she isn't fired. I've always railed against our Puritanical value system that finds so much fear in swear words. They're only sharp and dangerous if you give them power. To me, the F-bomb is more of a slang than anything. It's not the boogeyman, and it won't devour my children. It just will make them sounds slightly less eloquent.

As far as I am concerned, in prime time television and in late-night television, swearing should be allowed.

So no, she should not be fired, fined, or disciplined. She swore, and I f---ing love her for that!

I do not believe she will be fired nor do I believe she should be fired. Watching the video clip, it is plain to see that she clearly understood the goof-up. Everybody should be forgiven for an innocent mistake where nobody gets hurt. The attention she is getting for saying it is probably good for the show however "bad" it may be on the listeners.

BTW: It's just a word. Learning to accept other people's speech is more important than trying to change it!

The following video makes my point although it focuses on accepting people who are over weight.

It would be nice to see her not fired but that seems to be the norm in television when someone lets loose the f-bomb

I think it all depends on the context. This was not an instance of her "bucking the system" and intentionally going out there to swear and offend viewers. The skit was about a "biker chick" character, and probably the main joke of the skit was that they used "frickin'" for every other word. (There are probably 50+ frickin's in a 4 minute sketch).

So it's clear that she just goofed and replaced "frickin" with its 'stronger' synonym, probably because it was her first major role on her first episode of "Saturday Night Live" and she got nervous. If they didn't fire Jimmy Fallon for ruining every skit in which he appeared for several seasons in a row, I doubt they'll let this woman go for one little mistake that didn't even air on the West Coast.

Of course not. The F word isn't really the bad word anymore.

In linguistics, we learned that every society and culture has about seven special words that go through a different circuit of the brain from all the other words of language, and that no matter which language you're speaking, there will always be a one-to-one correspondence of vocabulary for those seven special words with seven special types of kick.

In 21st century north american english, the F word has been replaced by the C word as the worst one.

She made a mistake. She should not be fired for that. Also, I don't think she will. When a show is broadcast live, they usually have a delay to filter out any unwanted material. In this case they could have just bleeped it out. So the error does not lay with just Jenny. I actually thought it fit well with the skit! I don't think SNL is going to be worried about the ratings boost from the attention either.

Just in case you missed it, here it is:

I'm really torn on this one. SNL isn't prime time, so it's not like children SHOULD have heard this, but it is public television, so there is an 'expectation' there.

I don't think she should be 'fired', but if the FCC fines the broadcaster or the show, I think she should have to pay the fine.

I don't think she should be fired for one mistake. I think this is a symptom of how casual we've gotten about foul language in general as a society. If this incident sparks a public debate, and makes us all think a little harder about the words we choose to express ourselves, it might even be a good thing.
