What happened to "Old Country" western singing?

It appears that western singing, which was not in perfect pitch but always told a story and was sung with emotion and soul is gone. Singers like Johnny Cash, Keith Whitley had it but now it seems gone.

When I hear the phrase "country music" I immediately think that I'm not interested in it at all, If you told me it was "Old Country" I'd say no, its really not for me....

BUT

Its a strange thing. If I'm listening to the radio and a Johnny Cash comes on there's no way you can make me change channels until its finished... If one of those songs with a story comes on, then I'm hooked. Keith Whitley is another singer who I can listen to again and again and again. His songs have a sense of genuine-ness about them that modern plastic packaged pop can never and will never have... I really thought I hated "old country" until I realized what it actually is.

I suspect that like blues its will actually start to grow in popularity as modern music fans see its influences and qualities in some more modern music and then go out and look for the original. Theres only so much 'Talent/Idol/fake reality music that we can take, and then we'll want the real thing.

• You make some good points. I agree that there may be a swing back to "Old Country" as it would often be a song of real life and I think people now want what is real and something they can relate to. Thank you for your response.

What I think is happening is the same thing that happened to disco. It will slowly stop becoming less popular until noone really knows about it.

most of the people that sang "old country" have made a dent in music society so it's nearly impossible to forget them even when they sang their songs years, even decades ago. People like Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, are huge inspirations to plenty of other stars, mainly country but some work with different types of music. Johnny Cash has practically become the musicman of choice when it comes to the twisted humor of survival horror movies as of late (Zombieland and Silent Hill are good examples) and he won't be forgotten, he's still up in the top 5 richest dead celebreties.

I enjoy the old country music, I have some, and this is my choice of music when I am doing my work, which is freelance writing. Kitty Wells, Charlie Pride, Slim Pikins, and Donna Fargo along with the other old time singers mentioned here will not be forgotten. I am only 43, I gre upp on this old stuff, to me it is comforting when I work.
