Conundrum Next Conundrum

You are going out to dinner with a group of friends. You are presented with one check. How will you approach payment without overpaying?

Maybe you ordered just an appetizer and they ordered the lobster and steak. You don't want to look like a cheapskate and there are least six of you. You know at least three are cheap. Do you overpay and eat it? Do you say something? What if you don't know them well but they will be important in the near future? What if they are jerk co-workers you see every day and they make an issue out of it? What if you say something about them pitching in met with a blank stare? What if you really can't afford more? What if you know the server is getting jipped because of the cheapies?

Well if you are presented with one check and do not want to split down the middle since you only had an appetizer then each person should make their own calculation and write behind the check what they owe (including tax and tip)and the last for digits of the credit cards or the cash amounts.

My friends and I adopt this method especially when there is a large group and it seems to work, if you are not able to get a separate check.

If that group is just impossible for you to deal with, it is best to ask for separate checks ahead of time. That will eliminate the problems. I know many restaurants are not thrilled to have to give out separate checks, but most will if asked.

If it is a group check that cannot be avoided, you can say something like, "My meal cost $_____ plus $_______ for the tax and $_______ for the tip, so here is my $_______" Put that amount on the table and let it go at that. Let the others battle it out!!!

Before we went out, I would find out whether we were splitting the check or paying for our own dinner. I am a cheapskate (although "frugal" sounds nicer), and not afraid to say so! If they all ordered dinners that were way more expensive than mine, and they all went on the same bill, I'd chip in what I felt I owed, including the tip.

If they were coworkers who were inclined to be jerks, I'd just let them kid me about it. If it wasn't that, they'd just be jerks about something else, anyway.
