Forget the "tragic final twist" as far as I'm concerned!!
When I see a movie, I want to leave with an "uplifting" feeling, so a "happy ending" is indeed what I seek!!
I like a good story or mystery or romantic comedy to be going on throughout the movie, but I want the ending to be fulfilling and make me feel that the movie was truly entertaining and worth my time and emotions.
I know it is "escapism" to enjoy the horror and weird movies that are out there these days, but they are not for me!!

I admit.. movies that get you emotionally attached and then KILL everyone.. are a bit of a disappointment, the perfect storm for example pissed me off to no end. I don't however mind films that don't really form a deep sappy connection with characters and then kill everyone like House of 1000 corpses.

So for me it depends on the movie and my mood. If I'm in the mood sappy love stories yeah, I want a happy ending damn it whether it's realistic or not. If I'm in the mood for blood, guts and gore sure, kill everyone. And finally if I'm in the mood for deep and meaningful I like whatever fits the plots best like in Gladiator.. it was tragic when he died, I wanted him to live and go boink Caesar's sister.. hell I expected it because movies often play to the audiences desires these days..but he died and that was realistic. Would have ruined the movie had he not.

Happy or sad... it doesn't really matter as long as
1) I don't know which way its going to go from the beginning...
and
2) its consistent with the rest of the film... If happy answer is tacked on to then end of a film then it feels fake and I hate that. If on the other hand everyone dies for no reason then I feel cheated.

Happy ending. I'm always the sap that wants everything to end well - the boy gets the girl, the put-upon person gets justice, the hero saves the day!
Tragic twists? Those are for people who see poetry in tragedy or can see the glimmer of light in a mass of darkness. Not me! I appreciate the art of it, but I don't get that deep-down satisfied feeling as I do with a happy ending.
So send me the sunshine and rainbows!

Honestly, it depends on the movie. Could you imagine, say, The Princess Bride with a bad ending? Or, to represent the other side, something like Macbeth ending well? The kind of ending is a natural outgrowth of how the rest of the film sets it up.
This isn't to say that twists can't exist, but twists that work should at least be foreshadowed, even if it isn't immediately obvious to the audience. And, of course, twists can be happy too -- out of left field, sure but not sad!

Why not have both? Create a mystery with a tragic twist that seems as if it's going to end badly for all, but then ends up being exquisitely and well done with a happy ending that isn't expected, makes for better showmanship, in my opinion.
However, here's the twist to my answer. Not sure I have actually SEEN such a film, but I can dream, eh? ROFL
