Do I absolutely need to purchase a wine refrigerator? I'm slowly but surely adding wines to our collection.

Most of these wines will definitely be consumed within 6 months (probably less), so is it acceptable/ideal to just keep them in a nice wine rack? We've built one in our dining room and placed it away from the light. I'm not sure I've reached the level yet where I want to spring for a big wine refrigerator - do I absolutely have to?

There is no need to keep wine in a wine refrigerator, unless you are keeping wine that is meant to be aged after you purchase it. Regular wine does not need to be kept in a wine refrigerator. The most important things to keep in mind when storing wine is that wine bottles should be kept away from sunlight, but you said you have taken care of this already. If you are storing the wine bottles for a longer time, they should lie down in order for the cork to remain airtight. Wine refrigerators become important if you are storing a great amount of wine, if you would like to keep many bottles of white wine and champagne cold at the same time or if you are storing wine meant to be aged. Wine that is in the process of being aged need to be stored at a very specific temperature for the process to work correctly. Most wine available for purchase is ready to be consumed, in which case this does not apply.

You are mistaken about not needing a wine refrigerator for "regular wine". In a six month period (or less) "regular wine can be soiled by exposure to light, vibration, humidity and especially fluctuation in the las two factors. Wine refrigerators are not just for wine that one is keeping for a longer time. More expensive wine cellars with wooden doors or UV-protective glass doors and humidity controls are more likely to be the right choice for the person lying down wine for a 3 of years to age it. lauriem, who asked the question and whose avatar is a bunch of red Cabernet (or Pinot Noir? grapes - photo too small to distinguish btw. the two - is already on the road to winegeekhood. I see some form of storage in her future.

The wine refrigerators are much smaller than they used to be - often holding just two or three cases of wine. I'll be lauriem has way more wine than this at home already...and if she doesns't she will by next week or month.

Wiine coolers, on the other hand, often hold just eight bottles, sit on your counter like a toaster and are great for the wines you plan to have in the next month that sell for under $30.

I've never heard of wine ageing being "a process" It is a natural occurrence, a phenomena. You need to watch the sources you site. If you researching an area of wine or oenology and you see the wood "supermarkeet" in the URL, you are in the wrong place.
