Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
Does it take a PHD (or MD) to tell us we are obese because we eat too much?
Dr. Gupta relays us the "news" that teens eat too much, which makes them fat. What on earth is wrong with people that they need a Johns Hopklns study and a TV MD to tell them this?

Well, that happens to most of us although we know that we really would get big and fat if we overeat. But most of us also need a scientific findings/research/explanation and most people that do them are doctors so they are the ones we believe in because they are authorized/knowledgeable to speak for that topic.

Sadly, it is part of a tendency in some segments of society to require validation of the obvious by so called "experts." When self responsibility is increasingly allowed to dissipate, at times even abandoned voluntarily, the value of common sense erodes with it; and in its place the often self-righteous and pompous voice of expert validation then becomes a necessity.

Parents tend to make up excuses for their kids. They're just big because we're big. It's genetic. It's in their extra large bones. Etc. etc. It does take a doctor in a lot of cases for parents to accept that their children are overweight or obese.
Then, there are some that still won't believe it even when told by a doctor. Sometimes there is no one on earth that a parent will believe when it comes to something negative about their kids. So even though Dr. Gupta relays the message, there are still parents somewhere that still won't admit that their kids are obese. Sad because it hurts the kids most.

Parents can be in denial about their food intake, and it's passed on to the kids. People often wonder how someone gets so fat because the obese person isn't seen eating all the time. The teens are going into the boys' or girls' latrine to hide, several times throughout the day, loaded with sandwiches and goodies to eat. Their parents, at their jobs, are also taking foot-long hoagies and other treats into the lavatories to sneak additional lunches. Everyone only sees them eating what a normal person would for lunch. But that's not the case. They go home all stuffed and ready for dinner. That's why they're obese, but remain in denial.
