Dieting and the holidays sure don't seem to go together. But like it or not we have to make the two fit - or our clothes won't! Here are a few helpful hints.

Don't starve all day and think you will get plenty to eat later. It's much better to eat small healthy meals and nutritious snacks throughout the day. The turkey is the only thing that should be STUFFED on Thanksgiving.

Have a cup of tea, bottle of water, or a low calorie beverage prior to your meal. Sip on the beverage as you are preparing dinner or setting the table.

Keep fresh fruit on the table and a bowl of nuts. These will encourage your healthy snacking.

Moderation is the key. Eat what you truly like but eat it to enjoy it. Take small portions and give yourself time to truly enjoy it. Eating slowly and savoring the taste will help you eat less.

Be thankful - for so many things and even ALL that food. Just remember you DON'T want to "gobble til you wobble"!

Thanksgiving is technically only one day, actually only one meal. if you take a satisfying portion of food for your meal, and do not refill your plate, one meal should not be able to adversely affect your diet to any great extent. I'd say you could even have one slice of pie with either whipped cream or ice cream for dessert. The important thing is not to gorge yourself, and not to eat all day, and most important, give away any leftovers (including pies) so you do not continually overeat during the next few days. Plan a nice long walk with someone on thanksgiving afternoon, and maybe plan a "Thanksgiving Tag Team" diet saving walk or trip to the gym for Friday and Saturday. If you eat a bit more, you can exercise a bit more. Good luck, you can do it.

It's actually quite easy: by having some discipline (which, admittedly, is quite hard for the majority of people). Just so you understand what I mean from a practical point of view: keep your hands of the snacks, candy, and "bad" food for once, don't eat too much of the "good" food either, say "no" to people that try to shove it down your throat anyway "because it's Thanksgiving" and - more importantly - say "no" to yourself, and get yourself to the gym (no excuses). Is it really that hard? Djeez...

The best way to keep to your diet during the holidays is to pick your battles.

You should eat on Thanksgiving and enjoy it. It should be a free day.

Pick 5 free days between Thanksgiving and New Years - put them on the days you have holiday parties or family dinners.

On those 5 days, eat what ever you want.

The rest of December and November, you stick to your diet and workouts.

5 days isn't going to hurt you. It's when people fall of the wagon for the whole month that they gain holiday weight.
