Here's where the power of the hostess comes into play. When she is making up the seating chart or asking the guests to be seated, the power of assigning head of the table is in her hands. At our house, head of the Thanksgiving table has the responsibilities of the Thanksgiving prayer and/or Bible reading and the carving of the Turkey. It may be that there are not many people who want to pray and also cut the bird, so the wise hostess could discretely ask around before the main event. It is not unheard of to split the duties, as the best qualified to pray may not be the least bit interested in carving, or vice versa.
