What 3 ingredients should Everyone have in their store cupboards?

What 3 ingredients do you think are essentials in every kitchen. I know we can go to the store to pick up extra stuff but what things do you think we should have to make cooking (and hence dining) more pleasurable?

Garlic, Basil and Rosemary. (I'm assuming that you've already included salt and pepper!)

With these three things, you can create wonderful meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner. Well, I'm not saying put garlic in your eggs but still, with this variety, you can add a little spice to your dish.

Garlic adds depth to almost all meats and pastas, Basil adds a little sparkle breads, and rosemary adds a little freshness to veggies, chicken and some fish.

I totally put garlic in my eggs. Basil makes a really gorgeous house plant as well. :)

Onions, salt, and pepper.. as far as dry goods you'd find in a cupboard for more pleasurable food. Those would be my top three at least.

Cold.. Cheese, milk and eggs.. as they are generally needed for most every dish.

Meat.. I'd go with hamburger it's the most versatile.. doesn't necessarily have to be beef.

I always make sure I have milk or milk powder, self-rising flour and butter flavored shortening.

With just those 3 things I can make biscuits or gravy or both. There is so much I can do with those three things.

With biscuits, I can make breakfast by adding jelly or jam. I can make lunch by adding meat. I can dessert by making cold biscuit pudding. Biscuits are easy and cheap to make and help stretch meals and snacks when the wallet is bruised.

The way I see it the 3 main items that should always be stocked are: salt, sugar and flour.

If one of those is missing, usually it will stall the entire cooking process. When armies moved en masse on the field, when the pioneers moved blindly westward, when ships went to sea, the first things they made sure to have in the form of dry goods was salt, sugar and flour.

I would always have Milk, Butter and Sugar. They are used most often, atleast in my kitchen, just about every meal.

- Olive oil. It's the most versatile oil you can have, more than butter in my opinion. Once you have olive oil, you have a way to cook any vegetable and most meats, as well as something great for bread.

- Garlic in some kind of form, whether powdered, garlic salt, fresh, etc. I put garlic in pretty much all of my recipes. It adds a lot of flavor just with a bit, and can turn something plain into something great.

- Cheese. I like good parmesan for recipes -- not the processed stuff, but the real thing. Again, you just need a little bit to make any recipe pop.

I consider the three essentials for my pantry to be beer, rum, and cheese. In a pinch I could get by quite a while on beer and cheese. I suppose good beer alone would do in a pinch. Still, with beer, rum and cheese in the house I know I don't really need to go shopping unless I really want to.
