What is your comfort food?

I rarely get sick. I'm proud of my iron clad immune system but when I get sick, I go down like a ton of bricks.

Today, I've given into the rigors of a seasonal flu and have positioned myself squarely in front of the TV to blink in and out of naps. I feel like something is missing. I think it's comfort food.

My mother wasn't a great cook (she freely admits this) and as a result, the closest thing I have to true comfort food is half cooked Kraft Dinner with ill mixed cheese.

I'm looking for a new comfort food. What food do you crave when you're not feeling well? I'd like to give yours a try for the next time that I'm sick and hopefully adopt a comfortable classic that I can hand down to my kids.

My comfort food is definitely a good bowl of home made beef stew. It's also very simple to make in a crock pot. Just take chunks of chuck roast cut into cubes, add any seasonings you like (you can also find pre mixed beef stew seasoning packages in most grocery stores), and then add any vegetables you like. Let it sit in a crock pot on high until the meat is cooked through, and you're good to go. It always makes me feel better, it has the same effect as eating soup when you're sick, but it is much heartier. This has been my favorite thing to eat when I'm sick or just generally feeling bad for many years.

Oh without a doubt when I'm feeling puny and need some comfort food to make me feel better it has to be a big warm bowl of Grandma's recipe of Chicken and Dumplings.
Easy to make and it just makes you feel better.
Theres alot of Chicken and Dumpling recipes on the internet and I'm sure you could find one that is to your liking.

This ranks at the top of my 'comfort' list, even if I'm not sick and still want that comfort.
(a shot of southern comfort might help too rob!)

Oh, yes! I love homemade chicken and dumplings! Unfortunately, living alone means I need to have the energy to prepare it. When someone else is feeling poorly, I have no qualms about cooking this (or homemade chicken noodle soup with my homemade egg noodles). But when I'm sick, I want something quick and easy (or someone else to cook for me, ideally).

Chicken and Dumplings. It is warm and filling and I loved when my mom made it. It is a fairly simple recipe of chicken, cream of chicken soup and Bisquick. Take boneless chicken breasts and throw them in a bag mixed with Bisquick, some salt, pepper and sage (or paprika). Cook the chicken in a pan with cooking oil and start heating up the soup in a pot (2 cans, half can of water), and when the chicken is done, throw it in the pot with the soup. Follow the dumpling recipe on the side of the Bisquick box and add a few spoonfuls on top of the chicken/soup, cover and let cook until the dumplings are or have expanded (usually 10 minutes).

Well, it depends on whether you have a cold or a fever. Although IPA's, weissbiers, etc are great in general, for a comfort food nothing beats Guinness!

So feed a cold, and I suggest:
Hard Salami, Sharp Cheddar Cheese on Pumpernickle sandwich with a six pack of Guinness stout.

Or, if you have a worse bug:
Limburger Cheese and Sliced Onion on Pumpernickle sandwich with a couple of Guinness stouts.

(you don't want anyone getting near and catching your bug, do you?)

I chicken and rice soup when Iam not feeling weel. Homemade, with chicken, carrots, chicken broth, onions, celery and rice. Not only does it make you feel better but warm and comforting.
Something else that makes me feel better is a nice warm cup of Herb Tea. Also some vitamin c drops always helps with a cold !!

If I'm down, it's kosher style chicken noodle soup with lots of cheeze melted in it, washed down with a blend of black-grape and pomegranite juice.

Unlike most women I don't reach for the ice cream when I need comfort. My idea of comfort food is good down home meat and potatoes. I love pot roast mashed potatoes and a big biscuit. Of course there's nothing wrong with ice cream sometimes too, but when it comes to real comfort I think of home cookin'!

Grilled cheese sandwiches. Piles and piles of grilled cheese sandwiches. With a giant glass of Vernor's ginger ale.

For some reason, (only when I'm sick) I don't take bites out of the sandwiches, I pinch off pieces and eat them bit by bit. It tastes good even when it's cold, but of course when it's hot and gooey it's the BEST!

Experiment with different cheeses and add some mashed potatoes as a side dish for extra warm comfort.

My favorite comfort food is a good chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. Throw in some green beans with bacon, and I'm all set. It's not necessarily the best thing for when you're sick, but I actually ate this very meal while recovering from surgery (the same day), and also the day my daughter was born. Good stuff...

If I'm physically sick - Chicken and Rice soup with saltines.

If its just general comfort - pasta with tomato sauce and meatballs, the way my mother and grandmother made it.

Creme brulee cheesecake.

It's a traditional cheesecake on a graham cracker crust and it's topped with a layer of creme brulee custard, and then topped with a burnt caramel glaze. HEB sells it and it's only $8 for an entire cheesecake.

It's sinful. It's decadent.

Where are my keys? I'm heading to the store!

My comfort food is a Vietnamese dish called Banh Mi Bo Kho, which is essentially a Vietnamese style beef stew with toasted French bread. I've tried some from restaurants in America and in Vietnam, and I can sincerely say that my mother makes the best.

The stew typically consists of tender cubed beef and sliced carrots in a very flavorful seasoned base. The soup base consists of herbs such as star anise, curry, lemon grass, and cinnamon (in stick form). It takes about 1.5 hours to properly stew. My mother adds in potatoes, which complements the dish perfectly although it is not used traditionally.

The dish is also served with a small loaf of French bread that is toasted a few minutes before you eat. You just break the bread up into small pieces and dip it into the soup. It is simply delicious.

While I'm not sure what my mother's exact recipe and preparation methods are, here is a recipe that I found online:

I have so many comfort foods! My recent favorite, however, is macaroni and cheese. The old school Kraft kind, with the powder cheese (that I am waiting for them to determine is cancerous) and lots of butter. So good!

Cheeseburger.
Medium well.
Carmelized onions.
Two slices of swiss cheese.
Beefsteak tomato.
Mayo, ketchup, mustard.

Side of steak fries with a big dill pickle spear.

I know it does not sound appetizing when sick.
I caught the flu a few weeks ago.
Beat it in two days by eating such a burger and sleeping for most of the weekend.
By Monday I was fresh as a daisy.

Its important to rest fully and feed your body when sick.
That way your body has the energy and nutrients to fight the virus head on.

Soups are good when you are sick. Get some nice crispy crackers. If you like Oatmeal or Cream of wheat that is comforting too. Ice cream, mashed potatoes, pudding like Jello chocolate, Jello with fruit in it, yogurt. Hard candies can taste good when you don't feel like eating much.

Here is what I eat when I am sick: boiled eggs, sliced tomatoes, boiled potatoes with butter and parsley, grilled chicken breast and ice cold milk and a nice piece of really good bread.

I just found something amazing at the store. Bacon salt. It came out of one of those big dispensers that you get candy from, and had a sticker that said "Everything Should Taste Like Bacon!"

After a bit of debate about the validity of the statement with my girlfriend, we decided that indeed, tonight's dinner should taste like bacon. We got some chicken, cooked it in the bacon salt, shredded it, and stirred it into some mac and cheese.

And you know, just the smell of bacon in the morning is like knowing you are alive and ready for another day. The combination of mac and cheese to re-live your childhood tastebud sentiments, and the chicken just to kick it up a bit. I would recommend it on any substance.

Regards

Now this is definitely an interesting question. Most often I don't have any types of foods that I crave when I am feeling really ill, other than maybe saltine crackers and sprite. I will often eat something easy on my tummy, like jello and the mac and cheese that you mentioned in your posting. Buttered toast (lightly toasted) or even some french toast with no syrup but a sugar and cinnamon light coating (lightly sprinkled), to give me a taste of something sweet without it being overwhelming. Plus, that way you get a carbohydrate and a protein, even so slightly bland, easy enough on the stomach but strong enough to help put something on your stomach, especially if you are in need of taking medicines while sick. Just a few ideas to mull over. Hope you feel better!
