What should I look for when shopping for a good dessert wine?

Would the type of dessert wine depend on the type of dessert?

It's a good idea to pair the dessert and the wine, just like you would pair the main course and wine. A dessert wine should typically be sweeter than the dessert. The intensity of the dessert and the wine should be similar, just like light food is typically paired with lighter wine. If you are serving a sweet dessert, consider a fortified wine. Many dessert wines have a higher alcohol content than regular wine. Keep in mind that you don't have to pair a dessert with a dessert wine - there are other types of wine which pair well with dessert as well.
