I probably wouldn't do much except give the host a very dirty look. There is no real sense in making a scene because that just makes a person look stupid. I would just just give him a very dirty look and keep waiting. :-)

It would be very unlike me to wait around for anything for 45 minutes in the first place, but assuming this restaurant was so incredible that I was willing to do so, then I would certainly be a bit annoyed if they didn't seat me at the same time or within a minute or two after the celebrity came along. If I wasn't given a table at that time, I wouldn't waste any more of my day waiting.

I'd rather be treated well at a cheap family restaurant or fast food place than be mistreated at a nicer place, especially if I'm already very hungry from waiting so long. Therefore, I would leave and eat elsewhere, and probably not bother trying that restaurant again.

I accept the reality that this sort of thing goes on in the world, so it wouldn't exactly shock me. In fact, sometimes I appreciate it when a person or business shows me up front exactly who they are and what they will do. That way, I know not to bother with them again or benefit from my money at all.

I might even say "Thank you for showing me who you are!" Sometimes it is satisfying-- and even a little fun-- to leave 'em wondering.

I've also been known to write sincere letters to managers or owners when something has displeased me a great deal or when I believe that I should have been treated better as a customer, and I have found that I get very positive results when I do so.

I would be annoyed, but I think I would understand. Celebrities are often catty, spoiled and immature. If they got told to wait, they might make a scene, say something about about the restaurant in a public way to damage their reputation and business, etc. The host or hostess is probably also assuming that their patronage could be really good for business, and that if they get treated well, they'll leave a generous tip.

Fair? No. But can you really blame them for seating the celebrity right away?

I would expect the hostess to be apologetic, and the staff to be gracious with other customers. If they weren't, then I would probably right a letter to the manager later.

I have had this happen to me and I opened my mouth. In NYC you always see this even in stores when they cut to the front of the line. I always say out loud unless your paying for everyone you just cut off the line starts at the other end. I was even in Motor Vehicle downtown and had some guy try to cut in front of me and I was the only one on the line. I told him the line started behind me try to find it. I didn't know who he was but the Officer that was laughing on the way out told me he was on some TV show. I don.t care it happens to often and I pay the same money they do. If they want to argue I tell them how their last movie or song was a bomb.

This web site is a mess. But you were selected as best answer as at least you'd write a letter. As per my comment this happens to often in NYC and I see them all the time. I have had my bill picked up or a bottle of wine sent to my table because of my big mouth.
