There's something about family style that seems to suit Thanksgiving particularly well. That being said, we have used a combination in the past when the table simply wasn't big enough for all of the guests as well as the food. What seemed best for us was to set up the side dishes as a buffet and serve the main traditional Thanksgiving turkey, stuffing and maybe cranberry sauce as family style. I thought it worked well. It allowed us to get a "family around the table" picture with the turkey, and preserved the "carving of the turkey and thanksgiving prayer" ceremony.

Our family is so large we can't do it any other way. We just set up tables, cover them in food, and every one eats. We don't sit around a table. ( For perspective I have 6 siblings+4 spouses and 11 nieces and nephews just to start that attend)

I think works well. We get a vast variety of food this way. Everyone gets to chose what they eat and don't. it also makes "floating" around to different conversations and people easier.
