I would sit down with my sibling and say look I know its rough but I am offering a hand up, not a hand out. There is a big difference between hand out and hand up.

A few years back my sister who was a single mom let it slip that she ran out of fuel. I knew she did not have the money to fill the tank, so I called my dad and we came up with a hand up. He drove me to the oil company and I gave them the money for some oil, and took the receipt to my sister. As I handed her the receipt I said just pay it back 20 at a time and we are good. Perhaps something similar would work in your case, take some groceries and say when you get some dough pass it back..

In my situation, I would not find it difficult since I am the eldest and I know them. I would approach them the way I used to approach them. After all, what are siblings for?
