Are "women only" taxis good or bad?

"Women only" transportation services are catching on in cities all over the world. Puebla, Mexico recently saw a fleet of 35 start up. Mexico city doesn't have single sex taxi's but they offer "women-only" buses and subways. Presumably the behavior of men throughout the world leaves something to be desired. Is this discriminatory, condescending, necessary? Should America have something similar?

Personally I don't like it. Women have always fought for equal rights. But they also expect to get special treatment. So its a step back to the wrong direction.

Here in the Philippines. Mass Rail Transit System - MRT 2 and LRT 1 have segregated the 1st and 2nd car exclusive for women, senior citizens, disabled, pregnant women, people carrying infants and small children (men allowed).

We have a congestion problem in our mass transit system. There were a few cases of molestation and harassment of female passengers reported. Good enough for them to take action. But not good enough to convince people if they didn't add the other clauses. I have ridden the reserved car along with my 2yr. old nephew to take advantage of this. But I didn't escape the "evil eye" of women passengers.

Most people commuting from work are all tired and in most cases wont give up their seats. In our local culture. Men are supposed to give their seats to old ladies and women. But in todays modern society, filipino male chivalry hardly exist. Especially if the ratio of Women to Men is 4:1 with a national population of 80 million. I do sometimes give up my seat for pregnant women and old ladies. But not if I am dead tired and my feet is killing me!

The idea of an exclusive for women taxi is kind of moronic. It would be just another form of sexual discrimination.

1. To qualify as a Women Only Taxi driver? You must be a. Female b. Homosexual Male
2. Will it be a profitable business? Not unless you add other clauses like a. senior citizens b. Disabled (male or female) c. Men carrying infants and small children.
3. Unless your paying the driver a salary. No taxi driver would agree to work in a boundary system.

(Boundary system is a fixed amount paid by the driver to the cab company for a set time period. Driver pays for all the fuel used. He returns the cab with a full tank and a car wash. The rest of the fare earned goes to driver)

As a female,I think no-to having this in the United States for the major fact that I see this as a target. It would be so simple for rapists,female-haters,etc...to find a victim because it is guaranteed that a female will be getting off of that transportation.
When we think we are making strides in the female movement,we are actually seperating ourselves from the male race instead of showing them that we are equal to them, which,I had always thought, was suppose to be the statement.

It is disgraceful gender discrimination. There is simply no excuse for it in the modern world. Separate but equal? We've heard that before.

I like the idea. If I were a taxi driver, I would prefer to pick up women.

I think it would only give an 'illusion' of safety, making a woman think she was safe from harm, when in reality, she becomes even more of a target. I mean, what bigger warning sign is there than "WOMAN ALONE!"

Also, I've personally known men who were a lot weaker of consitution than some women I've known. LOL I guess I'm saying women don't really 'need' someone else to protect them, and singling out a 'women only' taxi in America probably wouldn't work.

However, I can see in some cultures why it might. Just don't think it'll work well here.

It's a little discriminatory; however, especially in countries like Mexico where machismo is a part of common culture and many other places where women have to fear for their safety when they go out at night, a little preferential treatment couldn't hurt.

Women only transportation services serving to carve out a niche market for themselves and make their business better are providing a service to women which will improve their quality of life and allow them to have simple freedoms which men take for granted.

If this was in the US and a gay male was denied service, there would be an uproar in 24 hours flat. With picketing. I'm not sure I can think of a worse business model to try out in America. I think the fact that this shows some promise in other countries demonstrates just how large the differences in our societies really are. This model manages to offend just about every single group of people.
