Being raised in a small, Christian community I'm used to hearing and saying "Merry Christmas." There aren't too many folks locally that I would offend using that term. I've even wished the Pakistani folks who run a local convenience store a Merry Christmas out of habit, without thinking. I don't know their religious beliefs but they returned the greeeting and didn't seem offended.

If I knew for certain that a person wasn't of the Christian faith I'd probably offer them a Happy Holidays, but you can't always know by appearances, unless they're wearing a faith symbol.

Christmas is pretty much a secular holiday in our society now, anyway. All about greed and materialism; heaven forbid any retail Christmas displays should include the holy family! I even have to wonder why it's such a major holiday in Christian circles. It wasn't his birth that saved us, it was his death. That's what we should be celebrating, and not with bunnies and chickens.

I always wondered the same thing about the popularity of Christmas, @jillbeth.

Even considering the pagan holiday of Yule....that wasn't even the biggest holiday of the calendar. And it does seem that within the Christian belief system Easter should be MUCH bigger. Huh.
But you don't get to give gifts on Easter/Ostara (latter being the pagan holiday). You don't get to put up a tree and twinkle lights. You don't get to drink cocoa and mulled cider.

By the way, most non-Christians I know are NOT offended by a "Merry Christmas" greeting. It's nice to be greeted with happy wishes from your personal holiday, just as I might say "Happy Yule" to you with a big smile. :)

Merry Christmas!

I'm not a Christian woman, but the holiday has a lot of roots outside of Christianity making it easy for me to enjoy the holiday separately from the bits about the messiah's birthday.

Besides--and perhaps MOST IMPORTANTLY--I like saying "Merry Christmas" because it's NOT P.C. I hate when people have to edit their language for overly-sensitive folks who are offended just by the sound of the wind. Although "Happy Holidays" can be a nice generic season if you're sending warm wishes for the entire holiday season (Thanksgiving, Christmas, et al.), it really isn't a warm way to greet someone specifically for Yule.

So just to buck the trend of the politically correct, I say MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The non-PC thing to say would be, "Happy secular capitalist winter holiday."

If I know that someone is a devout Christian I will say "Merry Christmas", however I strongly favor "Happy Holidays" for most situations.

I want people to enjoy whatever holiday or holidays they celebrate. I think that Happy Holidays is more inclusive and therefore a nicer thing to say.

"Merry Christmas" is alot like saying, "Have a great Holiday, as long as it is Christmas". To me Happy Holidays just feels much more warm and sincere.
