Does the witness protection plan sound like a good deal?

WITSEC, the witness security program is describes as the following:
"Witnesses and their families typically get new identities with authentic documentation. Housing, subsistence for basic living expenses and medical care are provided to the witnesses. Job training and employment assistance may also be provided."

Is it just me, or does that sound like a pretty good deal for a career criminal who testifies against his co-criminals?

You hit the nail on the head with this. I think the offer for witness protection has to be considered by a judge very carefully.

To answer the question above because of how sweet the deal is it may be abused, however I think it is a very fair offer if minor criminals can be used to bring very dangerous criminals to justice.

If a moderate or dangerous criminal wants to use the program the judge needs to consider if the criminal can be reformed.

Though it may seem overly generous the witness is often risking their life and the lives of their families, some may even decline an offer this good.

A damn good one.

However if you think of it in another light they are putting themselves and their families in real danger. Maybe they are being given a fresh start on life and a lot of help obtaining it, but I wouldn't say it's free of charge. These people get to live the rest of their lives wondering, "Will they find me?"

Also at least from what I understand generally unless the criminal is a "little fish" so to speak they still are held accountable for their crimes.

If your family could be in danger, do it for them.

That all depends...yes a new life, new name and new home would be nice. But depending on what you are hiding from, people can still be after you and when some find you it makes things worse. You have to consider all aspects with a decision like that. If someone goes against their co-criminals...you better bet those people will be pissed and want revenge...it's a great help to get away and try a new...but it's risky at the same time...

Well I don't think theres anyone who sits down in a crime performance review and says.. "in 5 years time I plan to be in a witness protection scheme".

Its not really something to plan for, as by definition you're likely to be in some major trouble by the time it becomes an option. Right between the devil and the deep blue sea. So your options are likely to be "major jail time" or "leave everything and squeal like a birdie, hoping you don''t get whacked"

And you're only likely to get the offer if its thought you have some majorly interesting squealing to do. So if it helps keep some serious criminals off the streets, and is a cost effective way of doing it (prison is majorly expensive) it seems to be a good thing for society

It might be a good idea, if it wont do harm then go for it.
