Just be honest with them. Don't avoid telling them. Don't wait for them to come to you. You go to them and let them know why you cannot do what you promised.
Nothing is more annoying than having someone avoid me, avoid my calls only to tell me when I do manage to get in touch with them that they could not do what they promised. Then, whatever they say can come out sounding like a made up excuse. I can accept that things can happen in life that may prevent the person from doing what they promised.
Just go to them, be honest and face the consequences. Your relationship with them has a better chance of surviving this way.

• I guess honesty is the best policy. Or was it "Don't tell is the best policy?" :D

Be honest... Sometimes things happen and with the best will in the world people are unable to keep the promises they made.
1_Be upfront about why you can't do it.
2 Apologise, It may take a bit of effort to swallow your pride, but its the right thing to do here.
3 Let them know as soon a s you can so that they can make other arrangements and they aren't stuck at the last minute with nowhere to turn
4 See if you can do 'some of the task' even if you can't do all of it, but let them know this so that they can make arrangements for the rest.
5 If you can get someone else to help instead then that would be appreciated.
