As many as you want or can handle.
I personally have 5 friends that I could call my best friends not including my fiance and my female relatives (counting them, add about 6, which makes a total of at least 11)! If I were to add in my male friends and my dad, who I'm pretty open with, the count would go up dramatically. Sometimes that many confidants are hard to keep up with, but I manage. I try to get in touch with each of them every few weeks. Online social networks, mainly Facebook for me, helps me immensely! Otherwise, I'd always be on the phone! LOL!
It's more a matter of how much drama you personally can handle and how well you can let some stuff just roll off your back.
For me, I can easily handle making a few more friends and, over the course of my life, I think the number of really close friends I'll end up having at one point in my life or another could easily exceed 40! Ridiculous, I know! LOL!

I read a study once saying that the average person will meet about 20,000 people in his/her life, and that out of those, 2-3 would be maters... the kind whom you'd marry and share everything with, plus another 3-7 that would stand as best-buddies/perfect-pals for life, but that the total would cap at about seven. The study said that there's something about the social circuitry of the human brain that it can't really share itself out in wholeness and fairness to everyone when the number gets more than about seven people.
Personally, I think I'm so darn sociable that I'd get along with and be true friends to all 20,000 if they'd just behave themselves and let me, but alas... experience indicates that numbers similar to those from that study are what it's panning out to be.

I think that if we have but one true friend during our lifetime, we have been blessed. We may have many acquaintances and casual friends, but the true friend is one who is there for you when you need him/her and would do anything in their power to help you in times of need. Of course, we may have more than one true friend. It really depends on our own ability to be a true friend, also.

Join the Armed Forces. Those men and women know what true friends are all about.
The true friend is someone who will be there no matter what the need. They don't judge, condemn or pass judgment. When they visit you and spend time with you its in-spite of your faults not because of them.
There could be any number of true friends over a life time. The better question might be, how many people call you a true friend? How many times in your life will you be a true friend to someone else, not to judge or condemn them because of their faults?
I have had many true friends that have come and gone in my life time. Some have passed away, while others have moved away and still others were true friends for a season.
